What did QF do a couple of months ago?
1) Announce the suspension of services to CHINA (and Canada)
In the last few years, they've cut services to KUL, CTS (Sapporo), Seoul, and reduced capacity to Jakarta and Bangkok.
Why would they reverse all that NOW?
Besides, 65% of all international profits come from the US routes, with their new aircraft, they'd rather pull the B747-438 they have on the HKG route and put it onto the US. Replace them with the A330-300's they've ordered.
Right now, they have to rationalise, rather than expand, because their domestic operations have been causing them concern. Oh, and QF does not have a good reputation among Asians generally, do correct me if I'm wrong.
South Pacific routes are heavy with tourists and therefore have low yields, to enter the market with aircraft poorly configured for the purpose is to invite disaster.
