Smoking Should Be Banned, Do U Agree

Tue May 15, 2001 5:30 am

I think smoking should be banned on all flights. It is uncomfortable for other passenegers. Especially when you have to breath it in, in a long haul flight.#

Airlines are becoming more considerate over this issue and I think it should be banned completely.

Loved to hear what you think on this topic.

Bye !

I agree that smoking should be banned but perhaps they can start the smoking-rooms or smoking-compartments like on Air France.

Air France does not have a smoking department they hand out patches. The problem with planes is the air is circulated so it does not matter where they smoke!

On most airlines smoking is not permitted at any time anyway.

Hello Iainhol, I gotta correct you on that. I flew NRT to CDG AF flight 275 and CDG to NRT flight 273 numerous of times and they did have smoking compartments in Y and C classes. I believe this service was eliminated just last month. It was amazing to see people line up to these small rooms (converted lavatory I believe).

I don't want to get cancer. They can smoke their cancer sticks outside the terminals.

Frequentflyer5 I know they are not allowed smoking flights into the US, so I presumed this was standard on all flights. Thanks for the correction!

As of November 2000 ALL Air France flights have been entirely non-smoking.

I think eventually, all airlines will ban smoking.

Yeah, I think that smoking is awful, but an airline should not be forced to ban it if they don't want to. Remember, you make the chioce of which airline to fly on. Airlines are businesses as much as any others. They should be allowed to make a choice, that could effect thier airline, for themselves.

I heard about an airline that a few business men wanted to start in Texas(don't laugh) that would have been a "smoker's" airline. Something like this should be able to do business. The FAA should not have the right to thwort a legitimate enterprise in the way they do.

Smoking was a bad thing to start with. And permiting it on airplanes is even worse. I also don't like the idea of 200 people sitting on a plane with lighters. what if someone gets and idea?

Smoking should only be allowed if you agree to be strapped to the landing gear or on to one of the wings. This goes for other public places as well...if you want to smoke in the park, strap yourself to a cessna and fly over!

Very strong epidemiological evidence suggests that even small amounts of second-hand smoke harms some susceptible people. If peanuts can be eliminated, so can cigarettes.

Well peanuts can kill faster than second hand smoke, but you can't eat a cigarette.

While on the subject of eating, is it me or does your scents of smell  Wink/being sarcastic become diminished in the air?

Higher altitudes do diminish the capabilities of taste buds, so that's why many airlines season their food quite a bit...

So airline food isn't as bad as people say it is, they just can't flavor it enough.

Yeah, ban all the smoking. I am glad I don't do that stupid thing to myself.

i quit smoking quite a while ago.
when i was a smoker i couldnt stand if people smoked in the plane because its such a terrible smell if 50 people light up.
so even as i smoker i would have agreed to ban smoking from all flights. but one thing that puzzles me is why many airports in the us do not offer places for smoking. i remember a flight from FRA to JFK to MIA to CUN without a cigarette because at JFK there was no time and in MIA there was no room to smoke. why? nobody would be hurt if there was a closed area for smokers.
i think in the US the urge to force people not to smoke is a bit strong whereas in europe the goal to protect non-smokers is hardly met. i remember walking around brussles airport almost catching a smoke poisoning.

with respect to the proposal of banning smokers from public places such as parks: why not ban cars from NY? whats exhusted still contains noxious substances. just think of carbo-monoxyde.

I used to smoke quite heavily and managed to give it up some 8 years ago, and touch wood I seem to not have any lasting effects. When I was a smoker I never smoked on aircraft as I felt it unfair to those who were non smokers, sometimes just on the other side of an aisle. It's interesting to note that it's the middle eastern airlines that still allow smoking, although not all of them.
My favourite carrier is Kuwait Airways, and the thing I liked least about them was the smoking section in the rear of the aircraft that I walked through to go to the loo, it always stank! I'm glad to see on their website that they too have gone smoke free. Just how many carriers still allow smoking now?
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

No Reason Not To...

Tue May 15, 2001 10:10 pm

If you go through the postings on this topic, how many people have complained of the discomfort that is felt when smoking is allowed on a flight? Smokers have the right to smoke, but they don't have the right to impose that habit on other people. This is something that they can't seem to understand when smoking is banned in a given place. The immediate thought is that their rights are infringed, and not that others are protected. Go figure that Texas wanted to start their own...  Smile

Think of it this way - there's a reason why smoking was banned on most North American carriers a long time ago.

Cheers,
T.J.

Since fire is the biggest danger to any aircraft in flight, I've never been able to understand why any flame at all is permitted.. regardless of its impact on the comfort of other passengers.
Ask why..

It's already banned with many carriers but a total banning would be good, Passiv smoking will hurt you too!

Smoking should be prohibited on all flights in the world. Well, maybe cargo flights without passengers, it's all the same for me, if the crew smoke, but not on passenger flights.

Scientific studies have also shown that intolerable people have a higher risk of dying from cancer than smokers.
