PIA suspends Jakarta route

By our correspondent

KARACHI: National flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has decided to suspend a flight for Jakarta in its summer schedule starting from June 1, 2001. The suspension of flight is in pursuance of PIA's policy to close the routes that are running in loss, a PIA official commented. In a bid to rationalise the expenses with the revenue generation, the management is also considering various proposals including change in the routes and aircraft's model etc. sources said.

Creation of a new route for Singapore via Colombo to replace the one via Bangkok five days a week, is under consideration and according to new strategy of PIA marketing department two flights for Singapore will fly via Colombo, sources said. Marketing department has also decided to separate the flights for Toronto from the flights for New York. PIA fights fly to Torontothrough New York twice a week, but now, the national airlines will operate six flights a week for New York and two direct flights for Toronto in accordance with the new schedule.

The management has decided to defer for the time being the proposal for the inclusion of Glasgow, UK in its flight map. The decision was taken on the request of general manager PIA for UK that he required further time for its marketing, disclosed a high official in the marketing. However, the airlines is increasing per week frequency to six from five for Manchester, UK, he added.

Denying the impression that the management was compelled to suspend the flight on account of pilots' refusal for the waivers, he said " Yes, it is true that pilots have backed out from their earlier assurance for the waivers, but, rescheduling of flights is not a part of this exercise."

New management is trying to turnaround the corporation and the recent changes are part of it. Pilots association - PALPA had earlier assured the management of increasing the waivers from five to ten without any increase in the perks. Later, they demanded to double the overtime allowance for the extra time or they warned the pilots would once again observe the "Go by book move".

At present, the pilots are getting double for the flying allowances for the extra time. The management has decided not to kneel before their pressure and directed the marketing department to restructure the flight schedule.

Sad that Jakarta had to go, but its a good decision to drop non-profit routes, maybe Garuda should fill in the void with a twice weekly A330 or DC-10 service going onto the Gulf (Abu Dhabi or Dammam) or a 747-400 flying onwards to London Gatwick especially since the Pakistani community living around that area do not have a direct link except on Emirates via Dubai, seperating the Toronto and New York flights has been tried it the past but failed Smile

I remember someone (airmale?) saying that the Toronto service wasn't that profitable and PIA was close to axing the service, is the service doing better now?

The Tornoto service may have turned profitable other wise PK would not have seperated the YYZ and JFK flights, also the YYZ route is most unprofitable during winter Smile
