Boeing's Move Might Cost Millions in Lawsuits, USA Today Says

Washington, May 16 (Bloomberg) -- Boeing Co.'s headquarters relocation to Cook County, Illinois, has enthused lawyers who handle jet-crash liability lawsuits because the county is one of the most generous legal jurisdictions in the U.S. for victims, USA Today reported.

Lawyers said that bringing a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court might add millions of dollars to each verdict and settlement because so-called working-class Democrats, often unsympathetic toward large companies, comprise much of the jury pool, USA Today reported.

``Any case in Cook County is worth more than it would be in most places on Earth,'' lawyer Arthur Wolk said, the newspaper reported. Cook County includes Chicago, where Boeing will shift its base from Seattle.

Lawyers said it is likely that almost every lawsuit stemming from crashes involving Boeing-made jets will be brought to Illinois, USA Today reported.

Boeing spokesman John Dern said the move to Illinois was a ``strategic business decision,'' and he doesn't think company executives considered the potential effects of litigation, the newspaper reported.

So you think the lawyers will sue airline manufacturer just like they did to tabaco and gun ones? Both of these were sued in Cook County courts, true...

Well, it will not happen in first few years. Daily will not let that happen. Later, or sooner, perhaps they will.

I can already see spins about the "evil big business making airplanes and marketing them to children...."

They already do.
After the ElAl 747 freighter crashed in Amsterdam, people claiming to be relatives of people that supposedly died in the crash (many more people were reported to have died there than could have been in the building at the time) sued Boeing and ElAl, along with Dutch airport authorities and others for having created circumstances leading to the crash (in case of Boeing, building an aircraft that could loose an engine in flight).

Relatives of people who died in TWA800 sued Boeing for designing a fueltank that could explode (it was never proven that that is what happened).

Survivors of the Tu-144 crash at Le Bourget sued the French government, le Bourget authorities, Tupolev and others.

There are probably other cases.
I wish I were flying
