You can hear the deck squeek at the other end of the airplane. Bring earplugs.

I have heard from many Boeing and Airbus 'people' ie: mechanics and others from airlines and the companies themselves, that the Airbus planes are VERY RIGID, which enables a person in FC to feel every footstep from the aft lavs, and vice-versa.

I liked the A340, I have been on the Air Canada and Cathay Pacific A340's and they were both very comfortable, seat-wise, it was a bit ridged but I've been on worse (tu-154) The CX seats were among the best economy seats I have ever seen. (TV's in every seat). Nice plane but could be a bit quieter

Interesting how all three respondants mentioned the "rigidity" of the Airbus. How do you mean? A cheap, squeaky type of rigid, like the Chrysler Intrepid, or a European, solid type of rigid, like a Mercedes? Just on the tires, or in the air too?

I agree. Very loud, even in Business. But a beautiful plane. Why is it so much louder than the 320 series? Just the engines straining harder?

The A340 is NOT any louder than the B767 or even the B777.
The A340 has the quietest cabin in the air! I don't understand people saying otherwise, I fly regulary on A340 and 777 and find that the Boeing plane produces more noice than its European counterpart. (in Business-Class).
I must say that the MD11 is also very quiet and one of my favourite planes...
Shiek!

Don't Talk Around!

Hey people,

I would suggest: Please fly in an A340 first before you tell stories like "I've heard that...".
It's ok that you Boeing people hate the Airbus products, that shows the success of the planes. But you shouldn't talk bad about it just to express your dislike. I'm sure you guys have never flown on the A340, only on your magnificent sevens, so your conclusion is: Airbus is loud, rigid and so on. You know what? I can only laugh at you.

Now, NYC Int'l,
I know the A340, I've flown on Singapore's Celestar, and my impression was an extreme low cabin noice, it was almost too much quite for an aircraft. Additionally it was very comfortable.
But what was not impressing was the acceleration, that was weak. But ok, it is known that the A340 is no sportscar, the CFM engines just don't provide a lot of power.
Air France has equipped some of the A340s with personal TVs in Economy, so maybe you're lucky and can enjoy them.

Oh, by the way I've also flown the B777 and it's great too, very quiet and comfortable. But I wouldn't say there are big differences between both, the B777 and the A340.

Regards
Udo

I've been on Lufthansa's A340-200 and -300 and I can tell you that they are one of the most comfortable planes around. Very quiet and I thank Lufthansa for 8-abreast seating, not 9 as usual.

The only minus is poor acceleration (you can barely feel it, even on Newark EWR airport with 'short' runway).

This plane can 'eat' turbulences quite well, compared to B767-300.

I would like to second Dufo's comments on the Lufthansa A340. The plane is extremely quiet inside and the LH cabin is attractive. We hit some rough air over the Atlantic (this was DFW - FRA) and the structure seemed to be a good 'shock absorber'.

My only gripe about the LH A340 concerned the original YC seats. The bottom cushion, in particular, was too thin, and my derriere was sore before we even reached the east coast. But I note that they are installing a newer seat design -- perhaps it is an improvement?
