Westjet 737-700 Flights

Thu May 17, 2001 5:15 am

Westjet I think is going to be putting there new -700s into service 2 week early. My reasoning for this is because of 2 things in the Hamilton Spectator today there was an advertisment on pages A10 and A11 that had what new at the Hamilton airport and below that it has
New non-stop flights to Edmonton
Starting June 14 2001
More Non stop flights to Calgary
Starting June 14 2001
New nonstop flights to Regina and Saskatoon
Starting August 2nd

Well the Edmonton flights and the Calgary Flight were suppost to start July 1st and the Regina and Saskatoon flights were for August 7th

I hope i am right because the weekend of the 16th and 17th of june its the Hamilton Airshow which allows for some great photos.

Also What are they planning scince they have been quiet in the east for about a year now for new eastern Cities

a -200 can make YEG nonstop.

I think the first of WestJet's 737-700s are to be used primarily on the YYC-YHM route.

The YEG-YHM route might be flown on the usual 737-200 at first, since there won't be that many -700s to go around. But then again, I won't be surprised if WJ does decide to use the -700s on that route at the same time as YYC-YHM. WestJet is supposed to take delivery of four 737-700s before the end of this year. But that's according to the press releases section in WJ's website and the airline might have the deliveries increased if Boeing is able to keep up with the demand.

A -200 can do this route nonstop easily, since the range is similar to the YEG-YYZ route, which Canadian Airlines used to fly using its 732s.

Well the Westjet Press release released on March 1st says that with the addition of the first 737-700 the airline will add a second yhm-yyc flight add a yhm-yeg and add a third yhm-yow flight originally suppost to start july 1st. btw I never said that a -200 couldn't make yhm-yeg.

The first 737-700 for Westjet entered final assembly on April 26th.
If Boeing can complete the assembly and testing in that time period, its very probable we could see the NG's ahead of schedule.

Although Im not 100% about thier fleet activites (orders etc.) it may be possible that somemore 732's are comming online at the time period, enabling the early opening of those routes.

I think its ridiculeous that airlines have to wait years to recieve their ordered aircraft. Like everywhere else the company(boeing & Airbus) is quick to grab the money but dont give a shit thereafter.

FP_v2, you have to understand that while airlines can order a lot of aircraft, any major aircraft manufacturer can only make so many new planes per year, so while they can take the money, they can't just go and and make new planes and deliver them right away. In fact, it take weeks just for Boeing or Airbus to assemble and paint a new plane, even for a 737NG or an A319 and get them ready for delivery. As a matter of fact, Boeing's had had backlogs in recent years due to the continuing economic growth in the US and Europe and the resulting fleet expansion plans outlined by many airlines.

Did you guys see my previous post a few days ago? It has some info as to delivery date, and a photo of the 737-700 at Seattle.

FPv2, you've got to be kidding? Do you have any idea how long it takes to actually build an airplane??? They're many times more complicated, and much much more expensive than automobiles. It seems to me I remember seeing a show on the prototype 777, and they were starting manufacturing even before all the design work was done and it still took around 2-3 years from cutting the first metal until the aircraft was ready to fly. In fact, in this case WestJet fast-tracked it's deliveries by leasing the first aircraft from GECAS, their actual ordered planes are another 2 years away.

Well if it takes so damn long why dont they hire more workers. Operating on a skeleton workforce sure as hell doesn't help.

Low unemployment rates have created a labour shortage, making it tough to attract and retain employees. Boeing itself has been accused of poaching other companies' employees to fill its needs.

If Boeing is slow, FP_v2, you should see what governments can be like. It took my local city council some 10 years to decide what to do with an abandoned, decrepit movie theatre no one wanted to buy. Urban preservationists kept getting in the way, so council literally waited for the roof to collapse before doing anything. (Needless to say, the city I live in has a severe problem with urban blight.)

Boeing, by comparison, can take an order and, in just a couple of years, deliver a high-quality, state-of-the-art product. I'm impressed!  Smile I wish they ran governments like they run Boeing.

FPv2, I don't think you have an idea how large of an undertaking it is to build airplanes. Boeing has hundreds of thousands of employees, but the fact is that it takes time to manufacture and put together millions of parts. And in aviation, safety is paramount - quality control is a huge undertaking in itself.

Think of it as being like building a skyscraper: you can only rush it so much. In skyscrapers the concrete takes 28 days to cure, and steel girders take time to build. And you can't put up the 4th floor until the 3rd is in place. Likewise, composite panels can take days in autoclaves to cure. And you can't install the hundreds of miles of wiring that goes into aircraft until the fuselage is built. Needless to say, being able to deliver a $50 million airplane only 2 years after ordering (or in WJ's case, only 1) is pretty good.

Well they get enought because everytime I am I think the least amount of people I have counted get off one of their aircraft has been like 80-90 people and I belive that was from Moncton NB. They must be doing well if they keep expanding.

I don't know what time it will arrive, although I'd expect it to be sometime in the afternoon. Latest I heard is that it'll be for the WJ profit-sharing party on the 25th, and will then head out to YXX (Abbotsford) for installation of additional equipment. I'd suggest watching flightarrivals.com for it on the 25th, but keep in mind that date may not be totally firm, it's just 2nd hand info from WJ staff. If I find any other info, I'll resurrect this thread again.

I'm probably going to be back home in Calgary on the 11th, so I'm hoping I get lucky and get a chance to see it then.

Also, BTW, the official designation is 737-76N, so I guess WJ's customer designation is 6N.

Boeing and Airbus would run themselves in to the ground if they hired enough employees to deliver aircraft within 1-2 months. They keep the orders lined up so they can retain employees for extended periods of time instead of laying them off, and rehiring them every time a big order comes in. The airlines understand this.

Afternoon./. Alright.. I got no school so I'll be there anyways.
I hope to see it just as much as fellow spotters do.
I thought it was 71H ..hmm I guess I was wrong.
The registration is C-CIVP or soemthing that has an V or an I.. Not too sure but its what Ive heard.

This is going to be cool.
at flightarrivals, how Do I track it? I dont know its flight number.. Im not as familiar with that site as I use the Fids that CAlgary airport links.. Ya its down right now though.

The Calgary Airport Authority FIDS is fine, too, but I mentioned flightarrivals.com because I"m not sure that YYC FIDS would show a ferry flight. For flightarrivals.com just click the tab labelled arrivals, then choose city/airport and pick Calgary. It should be arriving from Seattle, but maybe it would come via Abbotsford or Vancouver, so if you see odd flight numbers then if you click on the flight it should show what type of aircraft it is (most ferry flights get odd flight numbers, so if it's something other then the 0XX, 1XX or 2XX numbers that most WJ flights use, that would probably be it). But as I said, the 25th may not be written in stone, so keep an eye out beforehand as well.

I heard the registration is C-FIWS.
