Will Qantas Retire Its B 747 Classics? When?

Thu May 17, 2001 9:46 pm

Qantas has placed a huge order on the B 747-400LR, A 380, as well as the A 330-300.

However, they haven't mentioned much about the retirement of their B 747 Classics.

Will they retire their B 747 Classics in the near future. If yes, when? I haven't actually heard much about this.

Hope to hear from you guys soon! Thanks!  Smile

I think that the A380 will replace some B747-400 on their long haul routes while the B747-400 will replace their 747 Classics.

United Airline:

As Geoff Dixon (or whoever it was) said at the new aircraft announcement: The aircraft ordered will be replacing 767-200 aircraft and the 747 classics.

The new aircraft (B744lr, A380, A330) are being delivered to Qantas between late 2002 and 2010.

So the answer to your question: Between 2002-2010.

Also, what about its plan to lease a few B 767-400ERs? I haven't heard much from them either.

Where the heck did you hear about QF leasing B767-400ER's?????????

If QF have ordered the A330-200, why ON EARTH do they want to lease B767-400ER's??????

Ever heard of reducing the number of aircraft types in the fleet?

We have discussed this before!, United Airline is right, I also remmeber reading somthing in AW&ST magazine. How ever I think that it was nothing more than some mistake, I have heard absolutely nothign else about this, and see no need for the 764's. As far as the 747's being retired I would say they are going to start a bit after the first deliveries of the A330's, starting with their 2 SP's and 238's I believe. Oh by the way I got the Qantas club magazine the other day and it had pictures(sketches) plus a bit about the 4 types of aircraft ordered. It said they will start taking delivery in late 2001, did anyone esle see this, I didnt think they would start that early?.

The magazine is wrong. QF announced that they would DELAY deliveries of the A330's until late 2002.

Coachman is right. Apparently, it is because they wanted the latest tech to be on the A330s, but now the Impulse thingie came out.. maybe they need the moeny to buy Impulse first?

We havent "discussed this before". You guys have "speculated" it before thats all.
Yep A330's are definently starting to be delivered from late 2002.

IMHO the 747 classics wont be retired until the 744LR's start to arrives but that is just my guess.

Victor Hotel: I think the A330's would probably replace the 762's. When the 744LR's start to arrive I think we will see lots of the 747 classics depart. But as their is 13 A330's on order and QF only have 7 762's some of the A330's could replace 747 capacity.

But who knows, This is just our opinions.

One more thing, why would they need the 764?

I belive Wunala Dreaming is about to go too. It's D-check is near, although i am not sure when. Nalanji? I think it is quite soon too. I am not sure.

Not to worry, i belive they will have more specials once they got the A330s, B744LRs, A380s... etc?

Will they go through D Checks as well? They should. They can still fly for another 5 years at least

Can anyone tell me 'how much longer' for the B 743s at Qantas? Will they go through D check as well?

No one knows exactly when. QF probably havent even worked it out yet. They will be with us for years yet!

Qantas are recieving their new aircraft between late 2002 and 2010. When Qantas announced their new aircraft they said they will be replacing 767-200 aircraft and the 747 classics. So that means unitedairlines: As explained before, that the 747-300's will be going somewhere between late 2002 and 2010.
My personal guess is around 2004/5/6/7.

No worries,

I imagine they will be around for at least 5 years as they will get rid of the SP's and 200's first (probably).

Yep I agree the longer they stay the better. Even the 200's still look good.

Probably these classics will be around for at least 5 years. Maybe 6 to 7 for the B 747-300s even.

Thanks!  Smile

Wunala is a 744 so it is not being replaced. Nalanji is a 743 and will be replaced along with the other Classics. First to go will be the SPs (replaced by A333s), then the rest by a combination of 744LRs (which will release older 744s onto existing Classic routes)and A333s.

Classics fly to Asian ports such as Taipei, Japan, Manila etc and New Zealand as well as the MEL-Rome route which is operated by a 743. I don't think they fly them to HNL or Tahiti anymore but did so until recently.

The 747SPs are Classics so they fly to the routes I described.

Classics are quite regular to Auckland Nalanji was here last Monday, 742 VH-EBQ today Friday.

I think that the 747SP's will leave in early 2003, the 742's by the end of 2003. I would say the 743's will leave from about 2005-2008.

We get to see every single Classic 747 of QF in Singapore almost everyday. At least 1 a day, quite frequently, all series, - the - 300s, 200s, SP

QF 747SPs fly to Singapore quite often I would say maybe twice or thrice weekly somedays you get to see both in Sin at the same time, only parked at opposite gates.

Coachman, like I said it obviously was a mistake on the magazines behalf, and I still dont see any need for the 764's. Sorry Tim forgot about their 762's.
