Working this flight on Monday night and I am really looking forward to it. The new First cabin is fantastic and has a real lounge feel and look to it. The new toilets are a laugh with their clear windows and its amazing how many people at 36000 feet still close the blind?????
I am based in LON but have a home in SYD which I try to get to as much as possible.
I work the 747-200 and 400 and 777 Fleet.
The crew can work in whatever cabin they like. We choose our working positions on seniority. So the most junior gets what ever is left. I personally think its a good system.
As for bullet flights you can be rostered any amount. We do what we call a back2back roughly every 28 days which means its either a 5 day or 6 day trip. The 6 days are normal and you go LHR-USA-LHR-USA-LHR. By USA I mean either JFK BOS IAD ORD EWR DTW PHL or CAN YTO YMQ. The 5 day trips mean a trip LHR-either BOS or JFK and then the next morning back from the USA to LHR getting back to LON that night. Then up the next day and off to the US again. Hard work and you seem to always be in uniform. At NWA they do a double b2b!!!!!!
My rosters can take me anywhere in the world that BA flies. We have a system to request a flight and thats what I am doing tomorrow night.
Chances of upgrades on staff travel......well depends how goodlooking you are?????????
Is there a set number of flights you have to do a month? You have to do a b2b every 28 days, what about the gaps in between? I imagine the rostering system ensures that you fulfil the contractual hours/no of days working etc, you're obliged to do under the terms of your contract?
Next question, where are the Flight Engineers for the B747-236's going after the 200's are retired?
PS Great answers BTW. Interesting to see how the "system" is organised.
Hi guys. And here are some more answers you wanted.
Yes I can be rostered to work from LGW but I would have to report at LHR first and then be bussed down to LGW. Quite annoying when I have to drive past LGW to get to LHR but its rules and hours etc etc. The FD can bid to fly from LHR or LGW and also just report to which ever base they are flying from? Unfair for us but thats the rules.
I do not have a set number of flights per month but the rostering system will endeavour to have you fly as often and as legally as you can re: hours etc. Although we do a B2B every 28 days it is not necessary that you do it......I have not done one for ages. Worth good money for us!
I very rarely fly 747-200 as there are so few nowadays but the last time I did and we asked what was happening to them it was said that most will leave BA and find jobs at Air Hong Kong or someone else I cannot think of just now. Basically they are going to have to find jobs for airlines with Classics.
The routes that are loathed are dependent on the individual. I personally like TLV as its a good route for money and short flight little time change and minimum stay with the beach across the road. Most of the women dislike Saudi simply because of the restrictions placed on them. Trips to SEA & YVR are disliked due to the long flights on a 747-200 with no bunk rest and just a night stop with an 8 hour time change. NRT is disliked by many due to the time change and being unable to do anything really in tokyo. MIA is disliked as the flights are always full and you get the most complaints on that one. KIN was disliked due to pax. travelling this route.
LOS is disliked due to the full loads and non stop service. It all depends on the individual crew member. Of all the trips we do i would have to say that KIN was my worse but we dont do that any more although it is to come back to LGW when the AML contract ends. Although I am at LHR now.
