A330 Question

Sun May 20, 2001 9:12 am

Hi all, i'm an Iran Air fan and have heard they are purchasing A330's so i'd like to know what the A330 is like. Whats its usual configuration ? What features do A330's have when delivered by Airbus ? Any real info on the aircraft really.

P.S. is it a good replacement for 747SPs?

Hey AmirAA,

The normal configuration is 2-4-2 in Y Class and 2-2-2 in Business class. The fuselage cross-section is exactly the same as the A300/A310 one.

Well what do you mean by features? Wheter is has PTVs or not obviously depends on the airline and I presume Iranair won't have any in Y Class due to costs. The A330 has a huge cargo carrying capacity.

IMHO, the A330 is an ideal B747SP replacement for Iranair anyway. Iranair fly their B747SPs on European routes so they don't need the very long range and the B777 may just have been a bit too big for them.

Many of the smaller airlines such as Aer Lingus are extrememly pleased with their A330s and I see no reason why IranAir shouldn't be.

Hope that helps!

Kind Regards,
Jeremiah Teahan

The A330 will be good for Iran Air - although I shall miss its SP's which I had the pleasure of flying on btwn KUL-THR in January. The A330s will need to be able to fly nonstop to BJS, NRT and KUL - does it have the range?

The number of pax that the A330 takes depends on the configuration choosed bu the airline. For example SAS will have 275 seats in their new A330/A340, while the charter operator Premiair has 407(!).

Just like birdwatching - without having to be so damned quiet!

Which version of the A330 did Iran Air order?

The A330-300 is the bigger one but has less range, the A330-200 is smaller but longer-legged.

Is the Iran Air order official?

To the best of my knowledge, there is (and has been for some time) an undisclosed order for 4 A330-200s. These are listed as firm in the Airbus orders spreadsheet.

This could possbily be Iran Air.

AKAIK, Iran Air has an agreement with Airbus to purchase A330-300's. But, it can only happen once sanctions are lifted.

As far as i know there is nothing stoping Iran Air from purchasing the A330's, yes they are 300's and a total of six are being bought. There is only US sanctions on Iran and as far as i know this will only stop them from purchasing US enigines for the A330 though the Us government didn't stop Iran Air from purchasing US built engins for its A300's in 1994 and relations are much better now. There has even been talk about sanctions being lifted as major companies like BOEING are putting pressure on the US government. Iran Airs is planning to buy 7billion dollars worth aircraft and asnctions cut hit boeing too.
