How Comfortable Are B747-400s?

Fri May 28, 1999 10:54 pm

How comfortable are B747-400s? I have only flown on the series 100 and 200.

It entirely depends upon the operator. BA's fleet don't have seat-back TVs and have Economy seating upstairs (6-abreast). Virgin Atlantic's fleet of five, however, are fabulously appointed, TVs, decent legroom, nice colours and the seats themselves are very futuristic and comfortable. I always find the seats in Qantas' fleet to be incredibly hard, and on their 22-hour hauls from Europe to the east coast of Australia this starts to seriously hurt one's butt. But if you're talking about jets, it's not the aircraft type, it's the seat. (My personal favourite for comfort is the A320.)

Never having flown on any of BA's 747-400s, I'm in no position to add my personal opinion but... according to BA's website, their 747-400s have Club World seating upstairs, which I assume is between Economy and First Class in standard.

Sorry to be pedantic but you know what this forum's like - if I hadn't mentioned it someone else would have pounced :)

If you've flown on the 100s or 200s, the 400 is the same. Different wall panels, and lavs, but from the passenger's perpective(in the economy cabin) its no different. I would have to agree that Qantas seats were hard. They're getting new ones(without footrests unlike all their competitors just about) that are really thin. The idea behind this is to increase the room between seats. I haven't tried it, but i am a little concerned about the comfort of it. Common logic tells us that if you have more cushoning, seats will be softer, but maybe they use some new material or something. Anybody know?

They're just the same as the updated 747-200's and -100's.

I've flown on a few....Singapore and Virgins are the best...Air New Zealands was comfortable too, i flew on it in '92 well before the fleet refit, so they are even better now i would imagine. BA has a few configurations on their 747-400s, there is Club World at times (business with cradle seats) or full fare economy with the 6 abreast config. But over all -400s are a very nice ride

Apologies To Cedarjet

It seems from this discussion that some BA 400s have economy seats upstairs after all. I've sent myself to my room for the rest of the day as a punishment.

As for comparing the 400 to earlier models, er... I haven't actually flown on ANY 747s yet. Should manage a BA 400 in September though - JFK to LHR. The only 747 I've been in was when NW used to fly from Prestwick (PIK) and had an open day when you could walk around one of their aircraft.

Hey David L, no sweat. We're both right, there are some BA -400s with Club World upstairs. My cousin flew on one to London from Sydney recently and was upstairs in Y class. She's a little claustraphobic, and I think 22 hours up there was a bit much. It sounded like flying 12,000 miles in a BAe 146 with the 6-abreast seating, poor little lamb.

I have been on quite a few 747-400s. The only ones I can compare with earlier 747s are on Northwest. I have flown on their 747-200s and -400s, and the seats were exactly the same, including the color scheme.
