Delta At JFK

Sun May 20, 2001 9:44 pm

Last year, Delta announced JFK would eventually become their second largest hub, they would have over 500 flights out of JFK, and would be second only to Atlanta (I LOVE Delta's hub at Atlanta!!!), so when will new services be started up??????

I remember reading the same press release, but the numbers I got were around 150-250 flights a day. They want to open up much more domestic destinations as well as some African, Asian, and South American destinations if the DOT will ever even let them(they've been trying for JFK-GRU for years!). In my view, Delta really doesnt want to build much of a hub in JFK. To most of their cities from New York they only have one flight a day and I think that's how it will remain. The only connections they really want to offer are those to European cities that aren't served by Atlanta. New York is mainly an O&D cup of tea for them and that's how it will most likely will always in remain. Atlanta will always be the crossroads of the Delta route map.

Delta should start a JFK-SJU route and it would be a sucess. At present only AA and TWA which will just be AA serve this route. Delta should really consider this route.

Only on Sat. and Sunday which isnt really enough. United should do the flight daily to give AA some competition.

Most likely Delta will expand the number of flights at JFK when their terminal expansion is completed. They plan to make terminals 2 and 3 into one huge terminal, and also use part of the new terminal 4.

I believe Delta would have made that announcement before the AA/TWA merger. The merger changed the nature of the playing field; now AA has a huge advantage at JFK. Could that be why Delta is now trying to develop Boston as a transatlantic ops base?

Lets clear a couple of things up ,JFK will never see 500 flights a day by any carrier ever!..

Here's a press release,it states that DL will tear down Terminal 3 and refurbish Terminal two and add about 16 gates to Terminal 4. I've seen pictures of what it would look like and there's no huge Terminal like AA's plan, they just add to Terminal four and refurbish Terminal two which is the worst Terminal anywhere in the US.

The most optimistic number in the press release is 220 flights by 2014,and that includes regional aircraft.

Don't get too excited about this though, they have yet to submit anything for approval to the Port Authority board of commisioners which is equally controlled by NY and NJ. It took almost 18 months for the commisioners to get the CAL and AA Terminal projects at EWR and JFK approved.

So ground breaking may still be a while for a new DL project at JFK.

The NJ commisioneers have to make sure NJ gets something out of every project list that is presented for approval, the DL facility at JFK cannot be built without NJ commisioners approving it. And they will only do that if there's something of importance to NJ which is also put together with DL's project, like a PATH link to EWR.

My take on this is that DL's recent troubles delayed their plans for JFK.
AirafriqueDKR's statement about the new terminal is true - but DL's reduced schedule due to their (now hopefully resolved) labour problems thinned especially the domestic flights at JFK. Add the equipment problems (not too many spare planes right now) - and voilà.
I am quite curious what will happen to their plans for JFK...
