Air NZ expands locally and overseas
(...) the Hong Kong government has granted Air New Zealand approval to service the Hong Kong-to-London route, as part of a shifting view on economic competition, it was reported Monday.
Air New Zealand is expected to start the new service by the end of the year and will also expand its Auckland-to-Hong Kong services to a daily schedule, the South China Morning Post cited market sources as saying.
The report said the new route was the result of a substantial expansion of Air New Zealand's air traffic rights into Hong Kong, effective immediately, which includes the right to pick up passengers in Hong Kong for transit to a further destination.
The terms of the new air service agreement mark a fundamental shift in the Hong Kong government's views on airline competition, the sources said.
at first, i thought this is to reduce the flying time between AKL and europe, however, flights from AKL to LHR via HKG are only about 500km shorter than the flights via LAX... (AKL LAX LHR 19268km, AKL HKG LHR 18777km)
perhaps the flying time is altered more dramatically, but i don´t think it´s a such major difference.
however, if NZ will serve HKG-LHR what will this mean to the LAX-LHR services??? in addition, NZ serves a vast network in the south pacific and connects this to LAX as well. i´m just curious if all this could be affected and if the LAX services could decrease eventually?????
