Best Hotels To See Planes

Tue May 22, 2001 11:41 am

Does anyone have a favorite hotel, or better yet a specific room number, to view planes. Do these rooms have balconies? Id love to do a weekend getaway of plane watching.

Try the Ramada at Heathrow...excellent views of excellent landings and departures. And, there are two TV channels...one for departures and one for arrivals...so when a plane lands or takes off, you can see where it is headed to/from and its flight number. Fabulously located alongside one of Heathrow's runways.

I second the Ramada Renaissance also. By far the best view in any hotel I have stayed in.

No, but there's a runway-side bar area which has a perfect view (I think you can go out to the balcony). Also, getting a runway-facing room is a must! Smile

In Singapore, I'll recommend the Changi Le-Meridien Hotel, the nearest hotel to Changi Airport, splendid view to see aircraft land and takeoff.

Westin LAX airport - request a spa room. You can sit in your own private outdoor hot tube and watch arrivals on the parallel runways all day/night long....

Just a clarification about the Ramada/Renaissance at Heathrow.

It was originally the Heathrow Penta, then was sold to Ramada in the early 90s and finally sold to Marriott in the mid-90s and became the Renaissance.

Make sure you ask for a runway room there - otherwise you will wind up with a great view of the front parking lot.

I would imagine the new Hilton at MEL would have nice views over the terminal.

The hotel is land side of the terminal but as it is built above the car park I imagine upper rooms would have a fantastic view

I think that the newly opened Hilton hotel at CPH will have a pretty good view over the airport. But I have no idea if they have any viewing facilities if you're not staying there.

I couldn't tell you room numbers but Miami Hilton right by the Airport has a great view of the runway. I'm pretty sure it's the 836 highway that runs east/west parallel to the airport.

When in ATL, I highly recommend the Airport Renaissance. I have stayed there a couple of times simply to watch planes.

The Amfrac (?) hotel in the centre of Dallas-Fort Worth Airport has a fantastic view over the airport. I stayed there back in 1983; it was $90 per night. Quite expensive back then but well worth it. I checked in at 12.05pm & checked out at 11.55 am the next day, so I made sure I got my monies worth. Unfortunately I booked the room facing the quieter side of the airport, but I still got a great view of the airport from my room and I was able to read off the registrations of around 25 ex Braniff 727's that were parked there at the time(With binoculars). I now wish I took a photo of that impressive line up. Oh well, another lost photo opportunity.

The new SAS RADISSON at Manchester Airport is excellent. An excellent view of the whole apron. Right from T1, T2 and T3. Plus an view of arriving and departing aircraft. The viewing area of the hotel is slap bang in the middle of the hotel, right at the top. It is kind of conservatory.

Ummmmm let me see if I can find a pic on the net........

LAX Hilton. Ask for any room ending in 31 on a high floor. (Although I must admit...may try the Westin next time--watching the operation from a hot tub sounds great!)

The Radisson Harbor View in San Diego has rooms with balconies that look directly at the arrivals path. It's on a hill so you actually see them touch down and take off below you. Top floor (22 I recall) corner room facing northwest is the best. Also, the Pan Pacific at the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport is excellent. Great to watch the landings during the afternoon thunderstorms. No balconies, though.

The Sheraton at FRA is excellent, connected by walkway to T1, the apron view rooms have a very good view, also the Steigenberger is quite good for viewing landing a/c if you get a corner room.

At AMS, the Sheraton has some higher-up rooms with good views of the right-hand side apron.

I haven`t stayed there, but the Sofitel at CDG overlooks the taxiways in and around T1 "The Concrete Donut"

Who needs in-room movies when you`ve got all those airplanes to watch  Smile

Marriott Hotel Mexico City Airport. Its connected to the terminal by an elevated walkway.

North facing rooms look out over the entire apron and adjoining runway. Great watching heavies (744, 747, A340s), from here.

Try the Hyatt at MCO. Just ask for a room facing the runway. I had a balcony that I stood on for about two hours watching the planes take off and land. You can see lots of airlines, both domestic and international.

I stayed in the MGM Grand Hotel in Vegas facing the airport on the top level. Nice views. Next time I'll have to get a hotel closer to LAS like the Motel 7 at LAS. Big grin

The Doubletree Suites in Phoenix has a great view of the runway and the terminal. Try getting a room on the 6th floor, though.

LAS is the best place to watch aircrafts. There are so many hotels that face the airport. I have wrote many posting regarding this topic, and I am convinced that LAS is still the best because the traffic may not be all "heavies" but the action is great. Southwest seems to have every 737 they own in and out of there every hour. MGM has a great view, Luxor, Mandalay Bay and many others will give you and excellent view of this very busy airport. As well, the city is remarkable which makes the trip worth while.

Hotel Marroad at Narita excellent views of aircraft landing on rwy 16 and holding short of 16. I would imagine pretty good views of aircraft departing 34 as well. If you book through the net you got a 50 % discount though i'm not sure if this still applies.
Also at Bangkok at the Quality Suites or Comfort Suites Hotel can't remember which one, but it is located at the departure end of rwy 21, excellent for viewing the heavies departing and if by some miracle they are landing on 03 you would have a sensational view.

Try the IAH Marriott. It is connected to the terminals by underground train. It also has a revolving restaurant on the top floor so you can see all of the action at IAH.

A second on the Renaissance at ATL. Another good one is the Holiday Inn-Airport, some of the rooms face the runway, and the hotel sits on a hilltop overlooking the runways, so good views can be obtained. The Hilton at ATL has a few good rooms to spot from, as does the Red Roof Inn next to Flight Safety's center. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the hotel at MCO, I can't remember what chain it's part of.
