Lufthansa. they flew to SYD and MEL quite a time ago. dropped MEL in ´94 (i believe) and changed from 744s to leased 763s (form subsidiary condor), and serviced the FRA-BKK-SYD sector three times a week. however, these operations soon ceased and since then there hasn´t been any LH services to Oz (except for LHcargo).
currently, LH is present in the australian market through its star partners TG, SQ, and AN, NZ. however, there are voices which state that TG and SQ cannot provide LH with enough capacity to Oz and so rumours arose which suggest LH would reinstate services to Oz within the next years. still, this is only a rumour and i don´t think this highly probable but it would be nice, though...
i believe AF, KL and AZ have ceased operations to Oz as well within the last years...

yes, AF stopped flying to SYD about the time of the nuclear testing...any connection ? dont know, but an AF plane was given a delayed service on arrival in SYD as a protest against the nuke tests...while we were also protesting in paris !
AOM I think has also stopped serving SYD.
Aeroflot also used to fly to SYD with their airbus.
And a long time ago UTA served MEL and SYD before being absorbed by Groupe Air France.
Werent there also east european airlines that used to fly to australia ?

Airlines which have at some time in the past operated to Aussie but no longer do on their own metal include:

American Airlines
Continental Airlines
Alitalia
KLM
Lufthansa
Air France
Northwest Airlines
Hawaiian Airlines
Aeroflot
Air India
Merpati Nusantara (although flights from Darwin to Kupang are still operating I think)
Sempati Air (although now defunct)
All Nippon Airways
LAN-Chile
Middle East Airlines

There are also other airlines which went belly up, and hence stopped services. Some of these include:

Cook Islands International
Lignes Aeriennes Seychelles

If I am missing any, I am sure others will fill in any gaps.

Some other airlines which used to fly down here are:

Southern Air Transport
World Air Network (an ANA subsidiary which used to fly 767s into CNS)
MBA (PNG airline which stills flies charters into CNS, and maybe TSV)
Kiwi International Airlines (the original)
Kiwi 2000 Airlines (2nd attempt at Kiwi Int'l)
Britannia Airways (not sure if their summer charters to SYD are still operating)

CO/BA....whilst CO technically does fly to CNS, the flights are actually Continental Micronesia, not mainline CO.

also JAT -Yugoslav Airlines used to fly from Belgrade to Sydney and Melbourne with B707. I think they ceased
operations in the 80 s. Dont know why.
ALso QF flew to Belgrade but they stopped aswell.

JAT also used to fly here with their DC-10s, and I am certain that services were halted with the trouble in the Balkans in the early 90s.

NW flew HNL-SYD, LAX-SYD, KIX-SYD, back in the early 90's.

Also had HNL/BNE/SYD/HNL in the schedule, but never flew it.
