Hey Guys, Let's Talk About Aviation!

Sun May 30, 1999 1:21 am

Hi everybody.

What I hereunder want to express is my personal opinion about this place.

When I joined this big group of aviation fan's I expected that we could discuss really aviation matters and all that is involved with that, I found out that some topics were real worth of it, but in these last days I think we're loosing the direction and something is telling me that we're taking this very personnal, and that's not my point of view. Lets gonna discuss REAL AVIATION TOPICS and forget the "war" between Airbus/Boeing or America/Europe or other non-sense topics, lets be serious! Do you realize if someone comes for the first time to this place and look to most of the topics, I think he'll give up very soon! Aviation is to be a fun hobby, not a place to fight or to put another down!
I'm an aviation enthusiast since I'm a kid and some of my very good friends are from my aviation groups!!!
Take care you all!

Hey, I know what you mean, we DO take things quite personally round here, don't we? It's just that some people are quite small-minded and nationalistic, an ugly trait and one which brings out the worst in others too. It's hard not to get a bit wound up when people accuse USAirways of treason for buying Airbus. Aaargh! As if American is best or something - it's a pretty offensive opinion to the rest of us. I only discovered the discussion forum a week ago, I've visited the site every day for months but only to look through the photo library when I was on the phone. But it's a great forum, so cool to chat about airline stuff and float theories since I left the biz.

I agree. I have been getting my posts deleted right and left, for no real reason. Jetpilot and I have really not been getting along. I posted about four topics today, and every one was deleted. I'm sick of this! This forum is supposed to be a place where we can share our views, not fight with each other and see how long it takes Johan to delete our posts. I love this forum, I look forward to getting on it, and I hate it when all we can do is cut each other down. This has to stop! Jetpilot and I have been fighting since I asked what is the worst airplane. I hate this. This forum has improved 100%, and for the longest time it was a great place to be, but now the atmosphere is changing to what it was like way back when British Airways 747 (user) was here. Lets do each other a favor and quit arguing. Fly 757-200!

How could JETPILOT delete a post? He is a bit tetchy but it's the after-effects of all those non-precision NDB approaches. I'd probably be the same. My other question, being new here, is who was British Airways 747? Not a nice chap from what I can gather? Tell me more. Anyway, the sky outside has gone black and there is thunder rumbling like crazy. Gotta go and check it out.

No, I meant Johan has been deleting my posts. British Airways 747 was a 16 year old who was on this forum about 5 month ago when I joined. He was okay, but he had a short fuse. The bad attitude of the forum wasn't his fault, but I'm getting at how long ago it was that the forum was this way. It's been much better up until now, and we're getting the same attitude that there used to be. JETPILOT and I have really not been getting along and it really burned when he told me how BORING my posts were. We haven't gotten along since. And it doesn't help when I post a perfectly good, aviation related topic only to have it deleted cause somebody doesn't like it. I don't know if anybody saw it this morning, but up until about 8:30 or so mountain time a topic called Anti-Airbus? was here, and then Johan deleted it. That burns too. I'm really tired of this, how's a person who hopes to pilot for Delta supposed to learn anything if all he's doing is getting bashed and his posts deleted? I cam here to learn and to have fun, not to be bashed into having second thoughts about aviation. I'm starting to think that if this is the way people in the aviation industry act, I don't want any part of it! I'm 14, I'm trying my hardest to learn how to become a pilot, please bear with me, okay? I don't want to be bashed anymore. Fly 757-200!

Fly 757-200,
I delete posts that doesn't comply with the rules, it's simple as that. You have been hit pretty hard lately but it's your own fault. Pretty please, read the rules before your next post.

If you have comments/suggestions or questions regarding this, please contact me by e-mail.

Thank you,

You can't claim to be too surprised when topics like "Anti-Airbus" get deleted, I never saw it but judging from the title I probably didn't need to. "Deleted for no real reason?" How about inflammatory, repetitive and more to do with politics than aviation? You'll get to fly 757s whether or not your views on Airbus are represented here, and you can learn loads from the contributions here by aviation professionals such as JETPILOT and ex-professionals like me. You seem like a decent chap, I'm not having a pop, just that I think your complaint is a little self-pitying. Don't be a martyr, enjoy yourself.

Hey 757-200, I don't think your posts are boring (although I never read "Anti-Airbus"), but this is what I mean about being a martyr, you really should get over it, if you can't deal with such a low-grade insult (it's not even an insult really) then I hate to think how stressed you'll get later in life. If you want to drive yourself to distraction over one little remark then fine. JETPILOT said one of my postings was "blatantly ridiculous", thing is he was probably right. Even if my point was valid, I still respect his opinion.

You're right. I am having a bad day. I am glad at least YOU don't think I'm boring. I'm sorry I'm behaving this way. I get offended real easy, I never did good with a converstion. I guess I'm not a conversationist! :) I get told by my dad how stupid aviation is all the time, and I didn't need to be told I was boring on the forum. Again, you're right, I need to cool down and forget about it. I'll be a pilot! I won't let anybody get in my way! JETPILOT has no fear of speaking his mind, I guess that's okay. I am a little sensitive to remarks though. You should've seen when I was into space. Talk about criticism! Well, gotta go, Fly 757-200 (Note the name change!)

Typo Well, I took a break and I think I've acted irrationally. I shouldn't have blown up like that. I guess I shouldn't take things so personally, I'm not in 7th grade anymore, for crying out loud! I'm sorry if it souded like I was yelling at you, I wasn't. I asked Johan via e-mail to just delete the "The Worst Airplane!" topic. I'll check later. You have been a good friend, Cedarjet. Thanks for helping me get over this :) JETPILOT: Sorry for getting so angry at you, you like to speak your mind; I like that. Now, let's make up and start over in a more positive attitude. Hi, my name is Brandon Williams, AKA Fly 757-200!, I live in Pocatello, Idaho. I am 14 years old, and I hope to be a Delta 757 pilot someday. I don't mind what kind of 757. I like aviation, I also like spotting, scanner listening, and aviation photography. I hope to enjoy being on the forum! Fly 757-200!

Sun May 30, 1999 8:21 am

Let me tell you what annoys me. The forum has really changed in the last 6 months that I have been here. There used to be alot more "proffessionals" here. And I used to be able to ask a question about "Bidding and seniority" issues, or weather a 141 training program would be worthwhile to someone who already met the minimums". A question like that today would quickly move to the bottom of the page.

About 90 % of the people in this forum have never even gotten there private liscence. The lack of aviation knowledge in this forum is staggering. But everyone appears to be an expert.

The Airbus issues and what's your favorite or worst plane are asked every few weeks if not more often. I know posting is fun but lets get the quality up a little. No more "how many people in the forum", or "The A320 is the best invention made. It's so neat it shouldn't even be called an airplane".

I admire your dream to be a 757 Pilot for Delta. But the reality is that you will probably never make it. (Oh Boy I'm going to hear it for this one) And when I see you say I want to be a pilot for Delta I say he's 14 years old what does he know. Don't you think we all dreamed about flying for Delta, or Pan Am in it's hey day. But the reality is that about 1% of pilots fly for a major. I know of pilots with 10,000 hours jet time that can't get jobs with majors.

And let me tell you it's not necesarilly the best thing going in the business. There are plenty of pilots who are happy flying DC10's for Gemini, Or 757's for Challenge. It is a true insult to them that they don't get the same credibility a Delta pilot would get. You will be very fortunate to get your hands on a 757 in your career. Let alone for a major.

You will soon see that in aviation your along for the ride. You go where the oportunites are. If your offered a job flying a DC8 for the worst airline in existance you go. You take what you can get. Maybe your there 3 or 4 years and they want to move you up to the L1011 and increase your pay to 100.00 per hour. But Delta is hiring.

You bought a house last year and your wife has a good job. If you leave for Delta you will be # 1056 in seat senioruty and 6800 in pilot seniority. You will be flying for half the money you are making now. You will have to sell your house and move somewhere where you don't want to be. But if you stay where you are now you might make captain in 3 more years. There are so many variables I can't tell you. You might not even be interested in aviation in 10 years.

And were not "fighting", or "not getting along". I don't really heve regard to you in that way. If you post a good question that I can answer I will. If I see a bogus question I'll tell you. I usually don't even look at who the poster is until I read the question. It's absolutely not on a personal level. You gotta feel out a forum and see what works and what doesn't. I and Johans are just letting you know the boundaries. So just feel it out and go with it.

And let me tell you if getting bashed in a forum, which in my opinion has not even come close to happening here, gives you second thoughts about having a career in aviation then Aviation is no place for you. A bad sim session will make a grown man cry. I've seen it and done it. This forum is baby stuff. You should try living with a woman. Not that I'm advocating 14 year olds shacking up with thier girlies.

I don't take anything personally in this forum. It's a forum. You need to have perspective.

Jetpilot; You make a very good point. I have not seen any so called "bashing" on this forum. I have seen disagreements and critisism. To me that makes a healthy forum. A few people take things very personally and react to remarks that others would not even think about. By the way what you said about living with a woman is just so true (no offence to any females here) My wife could MOAN and NAG for the whole of the UK, no the whole of Europe. I hope she does not read this site, or I will never hear the end of it. Take care.

Well, i must say that i think JETPILOT is 100% correct. Thats why i have almost sort of given up on obtaining a pilots liscense carrier wise, instead focousing on business aspects of aviation. I honestly don't see whats so attractive about the 757 either. Its a long skinning tube of a plane. Give me any wide body any day. I worked for a short time as a personal assistant to a manager at [airline name], and i can personally tell you the amount of resume's i threw away was increadible. I wasn't even at head office yet we still recieved them from all around the world. Even i technically wasn't a [airline name] employee, my employer was my boss, who was a [airline name] employee. I saw a lot of things that left a little bit of a dirty taste in my mouth that happan there, and really, i know at times they had people there who would do just about anything to hold onto their jobs. I saw highly qualified good people sacked as other employees plotted to have them sacked and complained about them and set them up. There was no limmit many wouldn't go to to protect their jobs. I told everybody that i was leaving in a few months and was only their for a short time, so i was left alone and not considered a threat to their jobs. I really hated parts of it, as i new that some of the people who's resume's i had to throw away were far better than some of the existing people working there. To top it off, my boss was gay, but married. I really hated that because i think i was only given the job because i was the equivalent of some sex object that he stuck at his office's reception and looked at all day.
I can tell you, its certainly not all glamorous and perfect like its made out to be.

Like once, there was this flight attendent(male) that, when in London drugged up some of the female flight attendents. he took them back to his hotel room, and told them that they had thrown up on their clothes so he had washed them, and that's why they were laying naked in his bed. In reality, the guy was raping them, one by one. He sucessfully did this to a whole stack of woman, and its rumored that he did it to 2 guys as well.

To tell you the truth, that is one company which i would rather not be associated with, and, i avoid giving them my business at times. However, after i finish all of these degrees, if they offer me a position, of course i am going to take it. Just like jetpilot said, really, its grab whatever you can get your hands on. Beggers can't be choosers.

I've reed your message and I do have some questions to make you.

You're one of the privilege ones that are commercial pilot, and it looks like beeing a pilot gives you a diferent level of thinking, and I disaprove a little bit that, specially when you say " 90% of the people in this forum never had their private license! - please explain what do you mean by that, do I need to fly a plane to be here? I don´t think so, what do you have more than I do? You have a body, a head, a brain, anything else that can make your diference to other people? Perhaps some more money, so you can be pilot now!!! But also saying to the kid he's not gonna be a pilot, give me a break, don't spoil the dreams of others, do you have kids? Do you have a wife, do you have a family? I have, I like aviation because when I was a kid my father didn't cut me that hobby. He knew that I would like it, so let him have some fun. With my kids I must not spoil their dreams and everytime someone that comes to them and try to mess with their dreams as a father I must help them, that's my obligation!
And by the way, I'm living with my wife for almost 12 years and that's not a big deal, perhaps is easier than fly a plane!!!

I really agree with JETPILOT, you don't need a pilot's license to have a higher status on the forum but if you're going to post topics, they should be interesting and not Airbus vs Boeing, Don't Be Mean To My Brother, Anyone Been In A Real Crash ("with violent separation of the fuselage"). I'm only a lowly musician (JETPILOT's probable comment: "get a real job") but I still think it's possible to communicate on a high level, based on having worked for airlines on the ground for a few years, read lots of books and co-piloted the ocasional Aztec, or just flown on lots of planes and picked up info from the crews, which nearly all of us do all the time.

The point I'm trying to make here is this. There is nothing wrong with having a dream. But dreams without reality are empty. I'm sorry I didn't read where reality needed to be checked at the door when entering the forum. I gave him the facts. He can do two things with that information. He can say "I'm going to be in that 1% and of that 1% I'm going to be the best". Or he can go and get upset and stamp his feet and call me every name he knows. I didn't make the rules, I don't like playing by them, and they aren't fare. But that is our reality. They apply to everybody.

These rules are governed by many variables even before flight training begins. The most important being health. You have bad vision. You don't make it. Another is finances. You need a lot of money. No I'm not rich. I will be paying back loans for another 13 years. Someone might be discouraged by that right off the bat. Third is your ability to finish high school and college. Fourth is your ability to presesnt yourself in a proffesional manner. Fifth is to have a good driving record. And this is all before you get the opportunity to begin flight training. Thats where the interesting part starts.

You need the ability to fly the aircraft, manage systems, and manage other flight crew members. The ability to handle stress and think clearly when under pressure. You need to want to be a pilot bad enough to endure the life style that comes with the territory when your making $13,000 per year. You need to deal with the rejection. And most importantly and the absolute hardest thing to deal with are your own personal limitations. One day you need to be able to look yourself in the mirror and say "Delta isn't going to happen, but I accept that and I'll be happy with what I have accomplished thus far".

I NEVER SAID HE WONT MAKE IT. Read the post more closely. I let him know I'ts a hard road. With many obstacles. I was told when I was younger that I could be whatever I wanted when I grew up. What people were telling me was half the truth. You can be what you want if you can afford to pay for it. And you pay for it in many ways. You pay for it monetarilly, you pay with your time, and you pay for it with your ultimate and undivided persistance.

And to reply to CV990's question of what I have that he don't have. I have experience and knowledge that comes with being and working as an airline pilot.

Hi JETPILOT!

True! I'm not pilot but about your last sentence you said, you need to me a little bit more humble, you seems like a new type of pilots that use their status to say what they want, and when somebody question them they show their flag "I'm a pilot!!!" well listen to this, during my whole life - and I'm quite older then you I have been dealing with airplanes, airliners, pilots and all that stuff and the people I most appreciate are pilots, but true pilots, those that started with DC-3 and finnished when they retired with 747, and when you look to those guys what do you see? Humble people, friendly people, willing to learn from us the scruffs and above all these guys are heroes!!! I've meet some of them in the past and I still go to their homes and talk with them about the past, and you know what they say? Aviation now is NOTHING compared what it used to be 30 or 40 or 50 years ago! And the funny thing is I agree with him, after seeing messages like yours!

The information that I stated in my above post was simply what was requested by you. I was answering the question you asked of what I bring to the forum. I stated "experience". Don't ask me for my credentials and I won't state them. You don't know an eigth of one percent of what makes up my character. Don't be so quick to judge others. If I told you what I thought of you by the contents of your posts, you would be very displeased. But I know that there is more to ones character than what one posts on a bulletin board.

And let me tell you something else. Those conditions that existed 30 years ago are the conditions I fly in now. I go to third world countries with no radars and controllers who can't speak understandable english who give us vectors into mountain tops. The DC8's I fly are 36 years old. Nothing in tha airplane is more sophisticated than what's in a Cessana 172.

How dare you ask me what I bring to this forum and then attack me for replying. Leave aviation discussion to people who know something about it.

The Last Word

Tue Jun 01, 1999 8:45 am

JETPILOT and others,
If you think this website is a little childish, well it is. But this website forum is for anybody who has an interest in commercial aviation. It is not a bulletin board to, or from, the industry. It has no minimum requirements, nor should it. If you seek a more mature-themed discussion group, there are usenet groups that supply that, some are even moderated to filter out extraneous material, the kind of material to which you seem to object. This, however, is a website for aviation afficandoes, many of whom, naturally, are kids.
That brings up Fly757-200. Who should care what he wants to be or do? He's an anonymous adolescent. If he says his dream is to walk on the moon upside down while drinking a banana daiquiri, why should you berate him for it just because it will never happen? Everyone knows the banana dacquari would float away and be lost before drinking it. No one cares. My dream is to go back to school, get a degree is criminology, join the FBI, get assigned as a special agent, uncover the alien conspiracy, get partnered with Agent Scully, or some other sultry vixen, and make mad, passionate love to her in a cheap motel during a late-night stakeout with an obnoxious neon light blinking outside the window. After that, we get married, move to the suburbs, where she models lingerie after quitting the FBI, and I spend my weekends trying to walk upside down while drinking a banana daiquiri. That kid's ambitions are nothing compared to mine. So let's make a deal. Don't poke holes in Fly757-200's juvenile ambitions or questions, and I won't poke holes in your juvenile spelling and grammar. But I like your suggestion. If you like, you can email me your posts and I'll edit them, and email them back to you. But that might be a lengthy process. Allow 4-6 weeks for processing.

I'm the fool? You can't type ten words without making a fundamental error in grammar twice. Look at your last post. You're not even aware of "you're" as a contraction of "you are". It's not "your" as in "your" to possess. Didn't they teach that in the 3rd grade? You got a pilot's licence, but you never learned how to write past the third grade level? "You're" the circus.

BTW, "sideshow" is one word.

Hmmm.
Jetpilot has stated that he does not mind some typos in his work. We all understand what he means. But when some one who points out errors in front of everyone does not realize after a comma you do not capitalize the first letter in the next word something is wrong. Didn't they teach that in the 3rd grade?

Nothing is wrong Airbus Boy, didn't you notice that all the words in all the titles are capitalized? That is the editor default. Let me remind you of where this all started. He bashes others, so I bash him. Then it's even. He's rude to others, so I'm rude to him. Then it's even. He keeps harping about the juvenile nature of a child's postings, so I remind him of the juvenile qualities of his posts. Then it's even. The hypocrisy began with him. I just stick up for the little guy. That's my nature. In addition to my humanitarian side, of course, I contribute prolifically to this forum. The JETPILOT thing is just a snack in between interesting commercial aviation posts.

BTW, "someone" is one word. Now we are even.

How amusing this is. Jetpilot bashes boy. Boy recoils. Hmmm defends boy by bashing Jetpilot. What a total waste of resources. Why not post something worthwhile instead of posting essay-length drivel? But, like i said, it's still amusing.

Can't wake up one morning without finding stuff like this in the discussion forum. Ahh well.

Normally I would have deleted all these high quality posts but somehow I'm starting to get a bit tired of the constant need for me to intervene.

Anyhow, topic is closed. Further topics on this issue will be deleted. Try me.
