Now, Doesn't the JT8D-200 engine look like it has a bigger diameter than the DC9s JT8D-9. or is this just an optical illusion due to the size of both aircraft.?

I would be surprised if the MD80 engine was NOT bigger! The MD80 has like 35000 extra pounds of airplane.....

The MD-80 is a pretty big aircarft as compared to the DC-9, the engine is by far more powerful and definetly looks bigger. Check out the info on the aircaft data section on this site..
There is something special about planes....

Oh my god. Look at the last pic. It is a DC9 30 at KATL in old US air livery. I thought they got rid of all those and I thought they got rid of that livery a long time ago. The date on the picture says it was in 2000. I am really surprised that that plane is still around in old coulors it looks very EXTREMLY tired if ya know what i mean.

The JT-8D-217 or 219 installed on the MD-80 series is
considerably bigger and more powerful than the smaller
JT8 series on the DC9 series.

20000lbs thrust + each on the 80 versus 14000lbs+ on the DC9.
The best contribution to safety is a competent Pilot.
