Cathay A340 Engines

Fri May 25, 2001 10:20 pm

I am sorry, this question will probably seem stupid to some poeple, but I would like to know what engines are there available for A340. And also which one does Cathay use and why?

Thanks for your help.

For the versions currently available (the -200 and -300), only the CFM-56. For the stretched versions coming out (-500 and -600), only the RR Trent 500.

Did Airbus selected only one engine type for 340's, or did the engine manufacturers didn't bid for it?

The engines intended for the A340-200/300 was a SuperFan version of the IAE V2500 and the GE/Snecma CFM56-5C4. Because of technical risks, IAE dropped the SuperFan project which left GE/Snecma to market their CFM56-5C4.
