The current livery. Is the one I like. I'm not of great fan of bare metal schemes.

The current livery is better, the old one was kind of ugly.

I like the old Northwest Orient design, which I believe was illustrated well on the 744.  Big thumbs up

In the mid 1990s Northwest experimented with a number of liveries and versions of their logo/name, particularly on DC9s.

Nothing came of the experiments but does anyone have a list of those tried and how reaction was tested and what that reaction was with pax and company personnel?

I like the current one. The bare metal gets easily dull like white getting easily dirty.

I like both. But for some reason, I like the old one a little better. BTW, does anyone know what that old logo is?

It looks like some kinda backwards "s". I don't know what that thing is. Does anyone? I've always wondered.

definitely the new one. I really hate bare metal which is why I despise AA's livery. I think that the different colors on each level of the a/c look really cool. I especially like the amount of white used (not too much).

The new one looks kinda nice on the DC-9. But I still like the current livery.

NW current livery is by far superior to their old livery.

I would vote for the old livery, but neither has ever been very becoming to me. But both are a massive improvement over the one that Northwest used in the 60's--yuck! If you say you like a plane painted white, you'll change your mind when you see one of those things for sure!

I like the red tail, that is a Northwest trademark that should remain on any new livery they create. But I honestly think they could do much better. And as silly as the 70's "squiggely" emblem was, it has a little more class than the current "N with arrow" logo.

I liked the deep blue in the 70s-80s livery much better than the gray with the red and it is on that basis only that I voted for the 70s-80s livery.

I really believe that Northwest could make a great scheme with the red tail and either deep red or deep blue stripes, and either white or bare metal. But I am not sure how it would look. Sounds like a job for "Air Orange" or one of you graphic designers out there.  Smile

By the way, why did Northwest take the "Orient" out of its name? "Northwest Orient" sounds a lot more like a worldwide airline than "Northwest Airlines", which sounds more like the name of a regional carrier.  Confused

Reason I brought up the old livery, was it "Shiny Metal Livery" like American Airlines...nice look on NWA 744 old livery.  Smile

The current scheme is a classic (and that logo is a stroke of brilliance -- whatever design firm did that is terrific), but from the perspective of a part-time graphics guy, the current scheme always bothers me...

The tail is great, undoubtedly. But the fuselage title looks haphazardly placed, and it looks remarkably like Times New Roman, which is a font I deplore (and ironically, the one that comes out when i screw up font settings).

I don't mind the grey-fuselage one on the 757s, but all grey? I don't know how that would come out on a 747...

The old body and the new tail would look great in my opinion.

I prefer the new one definitely but I miss the old-bare metal look. The old livery reminds me of when I used to fly NWA all the time from ORD to MNL (Chicago-Manila), staring at the bare-metal jumbo at the terminal before I boarded the plane thinking, "Wow, what a beautiful shiny machine. This doesn't need any more paint." But now that I've seen the new one, I much prefer the new livery. It has more life to it.

Both liveries are great, but the old had a tendency to look dirty very fast. The current scheme of NW is one of the best in the world. It stands out in the croud like non other one does.

THE current one is great!

The N with the circle and arrow is VERY classy id you ask me.

Look close and you will see that a W is visibile if you connect the left side with the arrow.

Also, the arrow points to the northwest.

VERY classy.

You are correct in that the red tail is a trademark ofNW and I think it will survive any livery changes.

MAX Q ... You hit the nail right on the head!! "Bowling shoe" sums up exactly the current Northwest scheme. And although I find it cleaner and a BIT more appealing than their older one, it is still one of the worst in the US (IMHO). The title is too large, the colors are out of balance, and the tail emblem is too small. Honestly...I kinda like those above on the DC9-50 and 757....but as Flashmeister pointed out....I don't know how either one would look on a 744.

HADPA ... You asked why EVERY AIRLINE of the US has a boring livery? Because when compared to the rest of the world, this country is BORING and DROLL. As a proud Ameican, I hate to say it, but it's true. To prove it....just take a look at the new White House Administration.

from a designers' point of view, the actual paint scheme is way more beautifull. see, metal always reflects and changes the hue when sun shines onto it while matte paint always stays in the same tone. so, metal can look silver today and white-grey tomorrow while red satys red. also, I like this contrast between the hot, energetic red and the cold, serious grey (which is used to symbolize integrity, too ...). besides that: I like the understatement and yet visibility of the logo. compare it to lufthansa, their bird screams from their tail, it is a big as it possibly could be. this one seems to indicate more a "we are." approach. like rome: they didn't have to shout out they were #1, they simply were.

color is (next to type) the most powerfull tool for a designer to transport a message.

Man, I feel dumb.
I never knew the NW logo was supposed to be a N and a W, but if you look at it, connecting the arrow to the "N", sure enough there it is.

Love it, but still think the Continental Globe is real nice!
