I do recall seeing pictures of SQ in YYZ but I am not sure if it was a regular flight...But I do recall hearing that Air Canada and Canadian both complained to the governemnt that SQ and Thai were given fifth freedom rights between the US and Canada, I remember Thai used to operate an A310 besed in Seattle that was exclusively dedicated to SEA-YYZ-SEA, after AC and CP complained I think Thai and SQ both pulled out, and at the same time CP discontinued their flights to those places...It's too bad, would be nice to see both SQ and Thai here....Maybe in a few years.

I have an SQ inflight magazine from 1992 which shows a flight from Brussels to Toronto. I am pretty sure this was changed to JFK later on and a little while later switched to Amsterdam. Hope this helps!

I have an old SQ 1991 timetable which showed the flight started in June 1991 with two stops in Vienna and Amsterdam. AC also had flights between SIN and YYZ with stops in LHR and BOM.

Yes.

SQ used to operate to Toronto via Vienna and Amsterdam. But due to conflicts with Air Canada, about SIA getting the better deal to Toronto than AC, the Canadian government terminated the Air Service Agreement with Singapore w.e.f August 16 1992......leaving only Vancouver as the remaining Canadian destination.

What kind of aircraft did SQ use when it flew to YYZ? Was it Mega - Top?

I think it was the Megatop (747-400) that flew there.

Looking at their old timetable and readings on the Silver Kris Magazine, the 747-200 was called B747, not big top.

Funny though right after Big Top, SQ started to call out its planes with unique names like Celestar (A340), Jubilee (B777-200), Mega Top (B747-400). I wonder what kinds of names it will give to its newly purchased A340-500, A3XX, etc....

SIA fan: I think you are right. It might be a 747-400 MEGATOP.

I think A380 might be called GIGATOP.

Thank you guys for all of the info you gave me.

Just wish that SQ will ever fly again to YYZ. I wonder though if it's a matter of competition, why the Canadian government interfered with the decision of not allowing SQ to fly. Certainly, it may be the AC problem of not getting the service upgraded back in 1992.

It was because SQ was permitted to fly between Europe and Canada and seel seats...They were selling them at lower prices then Air Canada and Canadian could afford at the time of the north american recesion.

Hi everyone:

I recallred that SQ started 3 times a week SIN-VIE-AMS-YYZ way back in 1991, and as Jubilee777 mentioned, due to some confilct with AC, it first bacame SIN-AMS-YYZ and later ceased altogether. For the record, the AMS-YYZ sector was the first scheduled all pax TransAtlantic flight by any Asian Carrier. The flight was later changed to SIN-AMS-JFK...

As to SQ's aircraft names, I recalled their B747-212B were once dubbed "Super B" - althogh I'm not too sure how "official" that was. And for the record, SQ called their formed A300s SuperBus too - funny they never really gave any name to their A310s althogh for a brief spell some A310s had a sticker on them with the words "3-TEN"...

Regards
Megatop

In relation to this topic, does anybody have any idea what SQ load factor is now on its YVR-ICN-SIN route?

Am I right to say that they still use the 340 on YVR-ICN-SIN route?

Megatop747-412 :

You are wrong.

Air India became the first Asian carrier to operate an all-pax transatlantic flight in 1962 when they operated a 707-437 on LHR-JFK.

Between then and now they have operated transatlantically with 707-437, 707-337, 747-237B, 747-437 on a variety of routes including LHR-JFK, LHR-ORD, LHR-YYZ, LHR-YMX, LHR-YUL, AMS-JFK, CDG-JFK, CDG-YUL, FRA-JFK, FRA-ORD, FRA-YYZ, FRA-YUL, FRA-YMX.

SQ is a newcomer to transatlantic routes in comparison.

They operated the 747-300 Big Top there. The 747-200 was officially called Super B, as it is stated in the Outlook staff magazie(very old issue) as the Boeing 747-200 Super B, the biggest plane in the sky.

No. They didn't operate 743 to YYZ. They operated 744 there.

Just to add to the thread w/regard to the naming of SQ's aircraft - I don't think it started with the Big Top, as their B727-200's were called "Hightails" in their adverts! I don't recall them calling their B757s anything but their A300's were "Superbus" for a while and their 'newer generation' B747-200s were called "Super B"

They should try to get permission to start flying to YYZ again...especially since UA, AC, LH, OS fly to YYZ (varig is supposed to start soon). Toronto would definately be profitable!

100% agreed with Marco. SQ should start pursuing again the SIN-YYZ flight sector.

YYZ Sabena/swissair

Hello
I have a kind of off topic question, Does Swissair or Sabena fly / ever flown to YYZ? How many flights are from YYZ to ZRH each week?
thanks

I think Air Canada has daily service to ZRH,

SABENA and Swissair both flew to YYZ in the past, but left in and around the early 90's. I have heard that they will be both returning, although I doubt that SABENA will with all of it's current problems. Sabena flew the DC-10 and 747 to YYZ, and Swissair flew the MD-11. Last I heard Swissair was comming back with the A330.

Haj!
It would be great if Singapore Airlines will fly to Toronto. If SAS will start they own service (it would be great from Stockholm), then Toronto would have almost all the staralliance Airlines. I believe that Scandinavian have quite an amount of investment and trade with Canada... my company always has trips to Canada and America.
Canada is always an interesting place!
