Discontinued Aiport Service You've Experienced

Sun May 27, 2001 11:42 pm

Which smaller airports have you flown into (on which airlines) that no longer have any mainline jet service?:

BGR (DL: CVG-BOS-BGR, UA: ORD-PWM-BGR)

ACK (CO: ACK-EWR, NY: ACK-BOS)

ORH (US: PIT/PHL-ORH)

Let me re-explain my post. I'm looking for smaller airports that no longer have mainline jet service!

Montreal-Mirabel (CYMX) used to handle all intercontinental (ie non-domestic/USA) traffic into the city, from '75 to '97, scheduled charter and cargo. These days it's charter and cargo only because of lack of demand and the painful connection requried to the Dorval airport...

Small airport? Depends on how you look at it. The single terminal is pretty small (about 5 jetway gates, the rest of the gates are Dulles-style buses)

The noise buffer zone and property outline makes it the biggest airport "zone" in the world and it has 2 giant concrete runways, but it's hardly used. Talk about a total commercial failure.....

In the 1980's I experienced the Ozark syndrome first hand... Midwestern cities like: ALO, FOD, MCW, STJ, COU, PIA and CMI all had mainline DC-9 flights. After the TWA takeover all these cities except for PIA and ALO (I believe) had thier mainline service yanked.

I also recall TOL, CAK and FWA losing UAL mainline service.

Actually ZRS70 PSE only had Carnival and AAEagle as operators but they both dropped out, actually Pan Am 2 ceased ops.

AA:
ISP-ORD
ORD-ISP
Flight was on a F-100. I really miss the AA mainline service. Hope it returns with the growth of ISP.

US:
ISP-PIT
PIT-ISP
Yes, US did experiment with mainline service at ISP. Was either on a 737 or F-100, dont remember, as it was 6 years ago. As I said above, hope it returns with the recent growth of ISP.

ISP deserves another chance to prove it can support mainline service. I believe it can, because if the price is right, ISP has proven it can support service. Are you listening AA and US?

Bacardi182, Continental flies STN-EWR daily on a 757-200. Bluefox will fly STN-JFK twice-daily effective August 1.

Dragon-wings, do you know the type of aircraft USAirways flew from ISP to BWI? Was it on a jet or a turboprop (Dash8?), and what was that city in Florida? Thanks.

ILOVEA340 - The Stapleton runways and runway bridges over Interstate 25 have long since been demolished. They're redeveloping the airport into a residential and business development, and they've torn down parts of the terminal.

United's training center remains (and was recently expanded), and the Control Tower will stay as a monument to the old airport. The parking garage is used as a city transit center.

If you drive out there, though, you can still see the brown airport traffic signs directing you to and from the terminal. Way faded and worn, they're really the last signs that there used to be an airport there.
