How's Virgin Atlantic?

Mon May 28, 2001 9:48 am

Hey All,

Just a question. How have your experiences with Virgin Atlantic been? I am taking a flight from Boston to Gatwick in June and I think it's on a 747. I heard Virgin is very good but I'd like to get some input from some people on the forum. Thanks!

Regards,

Their Upper class is awesome. Their coach service is also a top-notch product.

I live in Boston and i have taken exactly that service twice. For starters you will notice how the seats are different in colour....no two seats next to each other are of the same colour. Their is going to be this flashy little bag with a few handy things in your front seat pocket. The plane is going to be a B747-200....till now atleast its a B742. But honestly apart from these things there is nothing more special about Virgin then any other good european airline.....im talking about economy class ofcourse. The food, legroom, service and all those things are just as good or as bad as most decent airlines.Oh yeah .. there is however onething you will find in VS that is unique somewhat ..... no Coke or Pepsi.....try VIRGIN COLA!
All in all its good ... definately much better then AA,UA or other US carriers.

Except that VS's coach has a 30" seat pitch compared to 32-34" on other carriers.

Definitely a good airline. Better than any US airline you can take to Europe.

Come on guys,

Virgin is awesome!! I have flown them 3 times from JFK to LHR on 744s. One time I was bumped up to Upper class!! I had a massage and all (I still have the complementary sweat clothes to prove it!!). Economy is also great. Good food, plenty of free booze, and AMAZING entertainment. Everyone with their OWN PTV, several academy award nominee movies to choose from, and of course super nintendo!! Don't sleep on the flight, you'll want to enjoy every minute!!

Virgin Cola is great, the food is good, entertainment is great, the FAs helpful and pleasant, the pitch is the worst Ive seen on any airline Ive flown. Ive only flown their 747-200s, so I have no idea how good or bad it is on the Airbuses or the -400s. The biz class is superb.

Can I please dispel this myth going around that the seat pitch is smaller on Virgin than other carriers. I am over six foot tall and have only found a problem if the passenger in front insists on reclining their seat as far back as they can. Otherwise the seat pitch is no better or worse than other airlines I have travelled with.

I've flown Virgin 6 times, all MIA-LON and back. Great airline but I must disagree with jetstreamer, the seat pitch is tight on some planes. Virgin has different capacities on each plane to fill their market. Since Miami is a very popular route, seat pitch is very tight. I can't speak for all of Virgin when saying that, but I can tell you based upon all of my experiences, and I'm only 5' 7. As far as service, I have had some very good flights and some not. Entertainment is A-1, 8 movies, 4 special movies, 12 Virgin TV channels, Super Nintendo, and computer games. Ofcourse thats only based upon whether you get the newest inflight program, and if it works. One time, my ptv kept shuting off and it had to keep downloading to get it up again (each time taking 4-5 minutes), after awhile I just said screw it and opened up a book. I have had a better experience generally with the -200s rather than the -400s. Best airline food I've ever had, they never stop feeding you. On the flights that have nicer FA's, they will walk up and down the aisles quite often with water to keep you hydrated. All in all you will not be disapointed. One thing I wish Virgin would start doing is assigning seats before the flight. When I was travelling with four others once, they had us all separated throughout the plane and we were finally able to trade with some people. I myself am leaving to London again on Monday, this time I will be flying AA for a few reasons, 1. I'm 747ed out, time for a 777, 2. more legroom and a wider seat looks good, 3. AA goes to Heathrow as opposed to VS to Gatwick, and 4. Time for a change.

I hope my comments are satisfactory and I wish you a good flight. You may want to check the "trip reports" forum for a couple of my last Virgin flights. They may not be there anymore considering I wrote them maybe last June or July.

P.S. Virgin is very good about flight deck visits, go ahead and ask.
