Boeing 737 Intercontinental

Mon May 31, 1999 9:32 am

Boeing is now looking at turning the 737BJ into a 95 passenger intercontinental airliner capable of flying 6700 miles. Don't you think that that is a waste of time considering the 737 is not ETOPS certified.

I should have been more specific. I believe that the 737 NG has to be recertified since it is using a new version of the CFM engine which they have been having trouble with. They have had a few bearing failures, and a problem with the engines HMU's or hydromechanical units. If the aircraft doesn't have to be recirtified then just ignore this post. If it does then what's the general opinion.

I think a long-haul version of the 737 would be an excellent idea, but I have always wondered why British Aerospace haven't produced a long-haul version of the BAe 146, which is a 100-capacity four-engined jet. The extra power is for STOL capability but with extra tanks it wouldn't have to fulfill any EROPS rules. (Have you heard that EROPS - Extended Range Ops - also stands for Engines Running Or Passengers Swimming?) I think the A320 has some kind of EROPS capability, Conair (Danish charter airline) fly from Copenhagen (is it?) to Florida, possibly via Gander or Bongor. And the same airline did the route in the 60s and 70s with CARAVELLES!! Who says trans-Atlantic twins started with the 767?! (They also flew Caravelles from CPH to Bangkok.)
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz
