Interior Cabin Width

Tue May 29, 2001 10:00 am

Hey how's it going? I'm new here and I work on an airport ground crew for the summer, love it, and have absorbed a lot pertaining to the field of aviation. Can anyone answer this question?

What's the interior cabin width of the DC-10 and L-1011? I know they both seat 10 abreast like the 777 and the 777's interior cabin width is 19' 3" I believe, but what are the dimensions of these old heavies?

Why would the L1011 be larger though? They both seat 10 abreast and the DC-10 does it with less width. Would you think the extra width of the L1011 is just wasted space?

Well, let me offer you this POV.

The L1011 and MD-11 actually see 9 abrest in most coach class configurations (2X5X2). However, it certainly is possible to seat 10 abrest on the L1011, and carriers such as ATA do offer a 3X4X3 configuration in coach when the fuselage is at its full width. Personally, I'm not aware of any carriers using a 10 abrest configurtation on the narrow DC-10, although I can't say that it doesn't exist.

Thanks for the response.

Airtours DC-10-30 10 abreast (3-4-3)

JMC DC-10-30 10 abreast (3-4-3)

Monarch DC-10-30 10 abreast (3-4-3)

I know the MD-11's are 9 abreast now (2-5-2), but why not 10?

The MD-11 and DC-10 are the same width, but I would assume that the carriers who fly the MD-11 just don't configure the interior in a 10 abreast configuration. There is no specific reason why they can't however.

Finnair MD-11 OH-LGA has 3-4-3 configuration. Didn't see any terrible difference in compare to OH-LGB which is 2-5-2...
