Tarom

Tue May 29, 2001 2:56 pm

A friend of mine is flying to Bucharest next month and he will probably fly TAROM`s ATR 72 from Warsaw.
Has anyone flown this airline recently and can tell me how was it?
Thanks,
Kuba

I've flown on Tarom a couple of times between OTP and FRA. It was surprisingly good. The planes were newer 737 aircraft with leather seats and the food was decent. The only strange thing was two ground agents in Bucharest trying to sell me an upgrade to first for "$100 in cash, but no receipt". Hmm, I wonder if that money would have been reported?

I've herd that their business class it's quite good as of lately. Check out this link http://www.airlinequality.com/Airlines/RO.htm
Are you sure that your friend is flying an ATR-72 ? As far as I now Tarom does not have ATR-72 in their fleet unless it is a leased aircraft. They surely have ATR -42-500which is a smaller ATR version with just about 42 seats.

Thanks for your comments.
You are right, TAROM doesn`t have ATR72, they use 2 A310-300, 2 B737-700, 7 B737-300 and 7 ATR 42-500 (data given on their website www.tarom.digiro.net).

The present TAROM fleet is formed by two Airbus 310-300, nine B 737, (seven owned by the company, two leased aircraft) and seven ATR 42-500. Other 6 B737-700/800 are already ordered and will enter the TAROM fleet starting at the end of 2001; there is an option for buying two more ATR 42, and, in addition, plans exist for replacing the two A310 with two new Airbus 330 or Boeing 767 ER aircraft. It is possible that a third aircraft be acquired for long-distance flights. The two leased Boeing are B737-500 but as we speak one of these has been returned to MAERSK AIR. It was the one previously operated by Estonian Air. They still have 2 B707-CARGO's and they also might have some leased aircraft mainly old BAC 1-11/400-500.

Thats a fairly impressive fleet that Tarom is planning. I think that Romania's domestic network could be regarded as fair, since most major cities have flight connections to Bucharest.

Just one question about Bucharest (since we really dont hear much about it), what foreign airline companies fly to this city?

PS> I like the new Tarom livery, its quite unique from everyone else, which makes it evermore impressive  Smile

Some fresh year 2000 statistics shows that Tarom has 30% of the Romanian market, followed by KLM 16% and Air France-Delta 12%. Other major foreign players are Lufthansa, EL-AL, Alitalia, British Airways, Swiss Air, Austrian, Sabena, etc. Tarom runs also a domestic regional network with flights to at least 12 major cities in Romania. There are few other regional airlines like Dac Air, Carpat Air, Airom 2000 sharing the domestic market with Tarom. Carpat Air is also flying some international destinations in Italy, Moldova, Hungary.

The latest buzz is that starting July 01,2001 another new startup airline will enter the Romanian domestic market. The new company, Angel Airline, is set up by Anglo-Romanian Insurance, Balli Group and British Aerospace.

Does 1975 count as recently  Smile
Can't remember a lot about it, except that we were quarantined because of suspected dysenteria on the aircraft (an Il-18 if I remember correctly, it was a 4-engined prop).
I wish I were flying

Very dissapointing to see that Tarom have stopped flying the route Bucharest-Dublin, firstly dropping the Thursday flight and now the Sunday flight. I hope they restart it soon, even if it will be weekly with the 737.

I think that dropping the 2 weekly flights to Dublin was just a quick temporary solution to boost their aircraft load factor. Is not just Dublin but also Florence, London-Heatrow, Chicago, Shanghai, etc. I think that for the summer time Tarom would rather use those aircraft on charter flights Norway / Sweden to Constanta (Black Sea Coast Resorts). Once the summer peak season is over we might see the weekly Dublin flight back on their schedule. With both countries Ireland and Romania fostering a strong growth in the IT related industry we should see soon an increase in business traffic between the two countries

 Big thumbs up

Cheers
