Jet Blue To Ord? Mdw?

Wed May 30, 2001 3:29 am

I wonder why Jet Blue doesn't fly into Chicago. Kinda surprising if you ask me. The city is a major hub and the airline market is great there. Is this something they are trying to avoid? Are the landing fees to high there, perhaps to the point that they would have to increase their fares? I would love to fly in those A320 leather seats from the Midwest.

ORD- Not a chance.
MDW-very possible. We've just got to wait and see.

I have a feeling out of the two it would be MDW, but don't count out Gary or Milwaukee. These are very close to the Chicago market. I really don't know how good Pan Am is doing in Gary, but it must be doing well enough to stay there. Gary makes sense after what I saw last week with them choosing Long Beach over all the other LA airports.

MDW would be great!! The n/s service from JFK to any Chicago airport is minimal. I have heard JetBlue's next city would be CLT but their newly announced service in and out of LGB may have changed that. Has anyone heard how the new west coast flights are going to effect JFK expansion? I have heard jetBlue will have 9 gates at JFK soon so it seems to me they can go as high as 80-90 flights a day with that number of gates.

MDW seems to me most likely. JetBlue would likely need one, at most two (if they add LGB flights) gates there; even at MDW that sort of access should be feasible. And once the new boarding gates are finished, gate space should not even be a question.

Gary's not out of the running, though, I bet. If anyone could make that airport--closer to downtown Chicago than Dulles is to downtown DC--into a viable alternative airport, JetBlue could.

Southwest's standard procedure is to get up to 11 flights a day out of its gates...if JetBlue is getting up to 9 gates at JFK, they could squeeze almost 100 daily flights in there.

I could very well see MDW service coming soon in the form of MDW-LGB, MDW-FLL, and MDW-JFK. I think jetBlue is going to try to establish LGB, then FLL, before they make any other big moves.

Well if JB is coming to Chicago anytime soon, it'll most likely be MDW. ORD is under slot restrictions until next year (although they could probably pull off an exemption). However they might want to avoid flying into an airport that is the hub to the world's two largest airlines, and also MDW is recognized as Chicago's "low-fare" airport since most of the discount carriers fly there. GYY might also be in the running.

Chicago-JFK should be a great market since most flights to NYC go to either delay-plagued LGA or EWR.

Very good point! I can definitely see Jet Blue going MDW-JFK. But I was just curious as to why not ORD.

people are coming out saying imediatly that there is no chance of ORD. There is always the possibility. WEhile Midway would be a better choice for them they can compete with UA and AA with higher quality service.

There's a chance they could go to ORD. There's always a chance. But look at their airport selection in major metro areas:

LA: ONT/LGB
MIA: FLL
SFO: OAK

And they chose JFK because they knew they could run an effiecient operation out of there. So that points to MDW or any airport other than ORD. But no I'm not ruling it out.

I read an article in the Chicago Tribune saying by this time next year Gary will be a mini hub for JetBlue

Probably because they haven't had time to initiate service to all the cities they want. Also, the competition is huge. the NYC-Chicago market has competition from American, United, Continental, Southwest (if you count ISP as NYC), Vanguard, American Trans Air, and if you change planes, US Airways, and Air Tran. Too competitive, and it already has low fare service.

I agree that they havent had much time to grow quite yet but I think Milwaukee would be an excellent idea for Jet Blue. ORD would be out of the question cause of the landing slot situation. MDW is a possibility also. I dont quite seem why JB would want Gary as a mini hub. I think MKE would have a bigger market for them and they could expand there. Give them some more time and I think we will see some exciting expansion from JB.

They would want Gary because the only carriers there now is Pan Am and if it ever starts service, City Link and freight JB could make the airport into chicago's 3rd which would kill peotone and also fares at gary are lower than RFD, MKE or MDW let alone ORD
