Aviation In Macedonia

Wed May 30, 2001 11:11 am

Does anyone have information regarding the latest situation in Macedonia forming a state owned airline.

The Macedonian government apparently has put pressure on Macedonia's 2 carriers Macedonian Airlines and Avioimpex to start merger negotiations.

Yes, the 2 airlines tried to negotiate but at the end of the day Avioimpex will not change it's position and Macedonian Airlines was not pleased with a proposal provided by Avioimpex.

Macedonia does not need 2 airlines at the moment. Macedonia really needs 1 state owned airline simply called Macedonian Airlines operating with a newer Western fleet i.e. 737-700, 737-800 or airbus 319, 321 etc aircraft rather than old DC-9, M80 and JAT - Yugoslav Airlines old 737-300's.

At the end of the day, the only way the 2 airlines can make a decent profit and get more of the passenger's confidence and have the fiancés to upgrade their aircraft, expand their network is to merge.

In my opinion Macedonia's aviation situation cannot improve if Macedonian Airlines and Avioimpex don't merge.

yes - there are (and have been) to many airlines on Macedonian sky -
some of these have already failed - Palair Macedonian, Meta Aviotransport and Vardar Bosna Air
there is also a small airline operating J31 - Air Service

Palair went bankrupt; it had couple of accidents.

I don't understant the desire to reduce competition among airlines to only one, state owned. I thought that socialist era was over?

I do believe that the more airlines a country has, is great however with Macedonia's current economy it doesnt need a dozen airlines.

If there was 1 stable and established
"Macedonian Airlines" then yes another would be great to stimulate tourism in and out of Macedonia.

But with 2 airlines currently with old fleets and limited networks, it doesnt make sense. The current carriers in Macedonia do not do enough marketing or advertising.

In this day and age who would want to fly in a DC9 when they can reach Macedonia with a new airbus 321 on Austrian Airlines etc.

Every country has a main airline, and once again it makes sense for the main airline of Macedonia to be called Macedonian Airlines.

Palair collapsed in late 1996. I am not exaclty sure 100% but from the source I had back then,
Apparently Palair was loosing money from day one, Mis management was another reason but this is going by what I have read so I am not sure if those were the reasons.

Palair also had plans to operate a weekly code share flight to Kuala Lumpur incopeartion with Malaysian Airlines but that failed. Plans were underway to fly to London, Paris and that also failed. From the outside it kind of looked like they were heading the right way even though they operated a very mixed fleet of older F28,BAC 11, TU5 but they had great new fokker 100.

I am actually curious myself why Palair really went broke. That is why I really think Macedonian Airlines and Avioimpex should work together and put behind their hatered for each other. Once again to avoid other airlines failing in Macedonia, the merger would be safe.

The second carrier option for macedonia will only work if Macedonia's tourism and economy picks up in the next few year or so...

Does anyone know what Macedonian Airlines plans on doing if JAT reclaim all their leased 737-300 and DC9 Aircraft.

I have just read that albanian rebels have taken positions from which they can easily shoot at Skopje airport - that would most propably cease all foreign operations into kpoje - no airlines are eager to fly their airplanr when there are lunatics with weapons having a "party" around the airport -
