A Long Time Ago

Wed May 30, 2001 1:41 pm

When I was young I thought I remember seeing a News report followed by some film of a National Airlines (Pre Pan Am merger) DC-10 In the water with only it's tail out of the water.

Did this really happen or am I confusing things from years ago?

IT happened, but I don't think it was national. I think it was World Airways.

No, it actually happened in 1979 or thereabouts, in the Gulf of Mexico right off Pensacola Florida. It was a National jet, but I can't remember if it was the 727 or DC10, the only thing I remember is it had an engine on the tail. As I remember, it was in sort of a marsh. I think most passengers got out safely. I'll have to look it up on the accident websites and let you know if I find the details.

Here is the info from airdisasters.com:

Date of Crash: May 8, 1978
National Airlines 727 jet
crashed in a marsh not far from Pensacola airport
three people died out of 58 on board.
Pilot error was to blame due to a faulty approach.

So no, you were not dreaming! This was National's last incident before being bought by Pan Am.
