Depending on where you are going to: if you go to UK, BA to London is better, if you go to Germany, Lufthansa to Frankfurt is better. Sorry for the stupid answer, but this is like: "I have to attend a meeting in Chicago, should I fly to Los Angeles or Miami?"

I prefer LH's transatlantic service to that of BA, but both are good; a lot depends on the fare and your mileage awards, of course, and if you would like to try a B777 or A340.

Have a good trip.

I have flown both airlines on transatlantic routes (in coach) and I would go with BA. I like them better, even though LH is pretty good, too. Check out what kind of planes you'll be on, BA's 747-400 and 777's have PTVs in coach (if you like that), LH does not have them. BA's 747-200 do not have PTVs and are similar to LH's. If you'd like to fly on an A340 "retrojet", you have to go with LH. They are very quiet, but other than that there is nothing exciting about these planes. If you are tall you may find it hard to sit upright in a window seat. The combination of yellow and grey that LH uses for their interiors does not do it for me, either. The overall level of service on LH will be OK, but I would rate BA quite a bit better.
Either way, you can probably go with whatever airline offers better fares and more convenient connections. FRA has a GREAT observation deck, you can get up close and personal with the planes. But also keep in mind that LH captains have been on strike recently. It caused a lot of cancellations on their domestic routes.

Both Airlines are pretty decent.

The big advantage is that with LH, you won't have to stop in LHR. That will usally put you into Frankfurt much later in the afternoon -vs- a direct flight to FRA.

Also adding a stop can bring in more chances of flight delays. I had some friends who flew from SMF-SEA-LHR-FRA on Alaska/BA. They ended up spending a few extra hours at LHR and didn't get into FRA until after 8:30 pm. Ended up at around 27 hours of travel time. They could have done SMF-SFO-FRA on UA/LH and it would have been about 14 hours including connections.

With BA you also dont have to go to LHR, the flight operates into Gatwick due to Bermuda II.

I've flown BA and LH from Newark to LHR / DUS. I would prefer BA. I think that the onboard service of BA is better than LH. Moreover, I think BA flies B777 to PHX. So you'll have PTV's on it. At Lufthansa "only" overhead TV.
