Job For International Pilots

Thu May 31, 2001 8:27 am

1. Anybody know any airline other than Cathay and Emirates that is hiring international pilots ( no need of local citizenship)? Commuetrs count to. Thanks.
2. Two months ago I attended a aviation conference "SAMA 2001". There was a guy speaking ( senior 742 captain from NWA) about hiring predictions for next 10-15 years. It looked prette interesting. In about 2007-2008 there will be not enough qualified pilots ( for majors and regionals) in USA!!
My question: according to this, do you think that US airlines are going to change their foreign pilots policy ( start sponsor green cards)? As far as i know no US airline sponsor green cards for international pilots right now. What do you think? Hope to hear something.

There are quite a few Asian carriers including Eva, Korean, and Jal. The one thing you will notice about these jobs the requirements are very high! I know Emirates is saying 5500 TT, and it is my understanding that most of the guys that go for these already have some airline flying.

I highly doutb the US will ever have a shortage of pilots, it is more of a marketing ploy used by flight schools. Yes a lot of hiring will be taking place, but that is different then a shortage. Currently at airlines like UPS there are 14,000 applications waiting to be looked over.

Emirates first officer requirement is 2500 TT.
Cathay second officer is 1000TT.

To be competetive at Emirates you need in the region of 5500-6000TT, I am unsure what cathy are saying.

Than why is it that united is looking for qualified forreign pilots? They must be desperate to find Airbus rated oilots because I had an offer from them and they where willing to do all what is necessary for the green card.
Also Emirates has lowered its requirement for hiring because ther simply are no more type-rated pilots available!

UA is not hiring foreign pilots, there are probably 10,000+ appliacation in the pile there. There really is not a pilot shortage in the US, think if UA where so desperate for there are 1,700 comair pilots that will happily fill their cockpits!

Polair, do not believe what he is saying. There by no means is a pilot shortage in the US, if you want to fly for a US carrier, marry a US citizen!

Sure there is a shortage! It will be even morse in 5-6 years. We are talking about qualified pilots. 14 thousands applications in the airlines does not mean that there is so much of them! 1/3 of them wont get in cause dont have four year degree. Some got DUI's, som are too old, some dont have all required certificates, soem wont pass first class medical, and so on.....
Majors will never have a problem with pilots, cause there is enough of them in regionals, but whet will regional do, when most of their pilots go to majors? And belive me, this will happened!!! "Vietnam" pilots are retiring right now, or will retire in 5-6 years. This is a lot of pilots!!
Is there any people on Airliners.com that came to USA to study aviation??? Say something people! I am in this situation now. I will graduate in near future and than what????
I think my girlfriend wont be happy about me and marriage with some girl from US.

Its true that there already is a shortage of pilots and will get even worse.

Cathay in 1999 cancelled several flights due to shortage of flight crew, yet they have 10,000 applicants on their database, one has to realise that just because 10,000 applicants are willing to fly for them it doesn't mean that they are all properly qualified like PolAir mentioned, not every tom dick and harry can be a professional pilot and out of those 10,000 applicants of whatever number it is, some of them are over 45 or even older, some have only got a PPL,...most of them haven't got what it takes to get in to an international airline.

That capt from NWA was realy woried. he was also recruiting officer for them. He said that half of the aplication is out on the beggining!! He also said, that NWA hired one eye pilot couple months ago! Guy was simply best qualified from bunch of aplications. He also said that in few years minimum requirements for majors will go down drasticaly ( it is alreday low! I know guy from my school- University Of North dakota- that was hired in Delta with 450 hours!!!!). That is why recruiting officers from both majors and regionals travel from one aviation school to another to establish some kind of connection with that school.
he concluded this speach:"I dont know what we are going to do in few years! You guys are lucky. You will not have a problem with finding job."
Yeah right, maybe if i find a wife here or they going to give me green card ( slim chances). I hate to spend $100K to get my education, and than go back to my country ( Poland) and maybe work for home country airlines (LOT), if thay hire me, which i dont think so. damn, i hope they will start sponsor green cards. HELP!!!!!!!!

Polair, This was taken from a friend of mine website which is dedicated to helping aspiring pilots (Jetcareers).

Pilot Shortages
About once every three to five years, the media sparks up the speculation machine about an upcoming pilot shortage. Stories of airlines canceling flights because of a lack of pilots, flight delays and worried frets about the future with so few pilots coming through the pipeline. The major airlines will probably never see a pilot shortage, but perhaps the ranks of certified flight instructors and part-135 air charter pilots will decrease.

The regionals will always have a need for new pilots. In the current job market, pilots with 800 to 1000 hours of flight time can find employment at a regional. However, keep in mind that the aviation job market closely follows the economic cycle. When I was in the market looking for a regional airline job in the early 1990's, if you didn't have 3,000 hours and a couple of space shuttle landings, you could almost forget about finding employment. Since then, the economy has picked up and the market for regional pilots has improved.

A major airline may have 11,000 resumes on file at any one time. In a brisk year, that particular airline may hire 800 to 1000 pilots from that bank of 11,000. That means that getting to the big leagues is always going to be very competitive and you should plan accordingly.

There are two elements to the hiring profile at an airline. There is the 'minimum' qualification and the 'average' qualification of new pilots. For example, United may say that the minimum total flight time qualification for an applicant is 1,500 hours. However, the average new hire may have 3,500 to 4,000 hours before getting hired.

Only problem is economy. I hope gov. will lower taxes much more. This will make economy going again. I hate to see 1500 or so pilots from Comair to compete with me.

No they would not give you green card. I dont know why! I am trying to figure out the same thing. I want to be pilot in US airline, and it cant be done. Not right now at least. That is why i asked about future, cause they will be short in pilots. maybe than, but who knows? WHO KNOWS??!!!!
You can get a green card in three ways:
1. If you have a close family in US, and they are US citizens. You have to apply for citizenship. In order to get citizenship you wait 5 years, and for those 5 years they give you green card.
2. You can play lottery. They give up 50,000 green card a year.
3. Some company may apply for green card for you. So called sponsorship. But airlines dont do it!!!!!!!!
