Chinese Carrier Launches Polar Flight

May 30, 2001

A China Eastern Airlines Airbus A340 passenger aircraft landed at Shanghai airport today after a 15 hour non-stop flight from Chicago across the Arctic region.

The fight was the first of its kind conducted by a Chinese airline.

When flying over the polar region, airplanes encounter a series of technical difficulties, ranging from the strong magnetic field to the extremely low air temperatures, experts said, adding that only a limited number of foreign air services have succeeded in flying over this region so far.

Compared with the current air service linking China and the United States, the flight over the Arctic greatly shortens the flying distance and may save as much as 150,000 yuan (about USD$18,000) in costs each time.

If the service is put into operation, passengers will spend three hours less in the air compared with the current flight, which travels along almost the same latitude for the entire journey, and the fare would be much cheaper.

"The fight was the first of its kind conducted by a Chinese airline" - Hmm, Eva Air is already flying non stop from Taipei to Paris, wonder if the writer knows...

Does anyone know when will AC start its polar flts to Asia?

Excuse me, but TPE-CDG isn't a polar flight, is it ?
I've checked on a great circle map and it doesn't look like it is.

Cathay is a China airline, if you look at it with the "B" registration prefix, and I believe they have Polars to YYZ and will soon have them to JFK.

Cathay Pacific is not considered as a Chinese Airline as Hong Kong has adopted the "One country, two policy" system and hence it is regarded as a Special Administrative Region of China.

Will China Eastern start (or have they already?) a route to ORD?

Just like birdwatching - without having to be so damned quiet!
