Exactly!!!!!! EXACTLY EXACTLY. I couldn't have said it better. We have a high cost high quality product, that nobody can really compete with. Those 2 companies have it good. Its really the Two airline policy refusing to die! If Australian Airlines and Qantas never merged, it would have been slightly possible. Instead i see us moving towards European trend of schedualed airline for business passengers or people willing to fork out the cash, and the bus for the rest. I think the only way anyone could challenge the AN/QF domestic seen really would be with the French high speed TGV trains. At 300 km per hour, traveling times on east coast routes would be only a few hours, and thats city centre to city centre. And the cost of rail will always be lower than air, simply because it cost a lot to leave the ground. If a freedy laker wants to come to Oz, I suggest he starts OZ-Rail. For those people who don't know, the state owned rail is old slow and run down, and really isn't an option because its normally far quicker to drive! This is the only thing i can see that would seriously offer low cost high speed transport competition at least along the east coast anyway.
It would be good for people wanting to travel say Brisbane Sydney or Sydney melbourne, or Brisbane Cairns, but i think it might take a bit to long for people wanting to travel say Cairns to Sydney, or Sydney to Brisbane. Ecen so, we should have this sort of technology here given the distances this bloody country has. LuftAOM, Cedarjet - what do you think?
