Commuter Aircraft?

What is the exact definition of a commuter aircraft and how do they differ from regional aircraft like the DHC-8 or the Saab 340?

I have 4 thoughts, but they might or may not be right-

1) i think they have to be jet aircraft

2) i think that they can't make any stops

3) i think that they are early in the morning (6:30-8:00 am) and night time (6:00-8:00pm) so the business men can have meetings then come back home and see the family.

4) i think usualy filled with mostly business men, and go from a major to a minor airport, lets use New York Cities JFK airport and upstate New York's Handcock International in Syracuse. from SYR to JFK in morning and JFK to SYR at night. Usualy same people take the flight for business porpouses.

I think myself it is mostly convention rather than a real difference.
Fokker 50s are commuter aircraft, so are ATRs.

The difference is not so much in the type of aircraft as in the line flown.

In general, I'd say regional are meant for flights between non-hub fields and commuters for flights between non-hub fields and major cities (usually hubs). The distinction becomes blurry of course if the major city is not a hub...
If the traffic warrants it, a 747 can be used as a commuter or regional aircraft (for example, 747SPs on internal routes in Japan).

Well you have commuter jets and commuter turbo props. I think that sums it up.
