U.S.A. Domestic 747's

Do you know what airline flies the B747 domestic in the U.S.?

I know UA probably does, but are there any others?

Also, do international carriers have more U.S. domestic routes in the B747 than American carriers? (I.E. JFK-ANC on China Airlines)

I believe that Northwest has some scheduled domestic 747 services as well.

Yeah, it's a shame they don't really exist too much nowadays. I remember flying LAX-JFK, JFK-SFO on TWA 741s, hell even STL-JFK once in a while. Although towards the end of their lives the passenger loads were pathetic. At times I would have the whole last section to myself (JFK-LAX). Plenty of room to stretch out, although I seem to remember the occasional oxygen mask flying out on a bumpy landing. Old birds, but classics. I imagine if United or northwest has any left they will soon be phased out. Shame really.

Isn't it interesting that the USA's "flagship" airliner (the mighty Boeing 747) is only operated by 2 US carriers (namely Northwest and United)?

Boy, if that isn't a patriotic/national pride and/or PR abomination, then I don't know what is.

Let me qualify the above statement. Those are the only two PASSENGER airlines to operate the 747.

Let me also give a premptive reply here (I know this is going to be asked).
Following is a list of US (passenger) carriers that at one time operated 747's, but do not any more as a result of disposal or shutdown. I'm sure I'll forget one or two, but this is most of them.

I dunno, Matt D -- plenty of airlines fly other Boeings, esp. the 767. I think it would be a matter of national pride that so many foreign carriers fly 747s. All depends on how you look at things.

Just not economical. And since US carriers AREN'T subsidized by the governement (at least not to the same degree as foreign carriers) they just don't see the point, thus the success of the B-777 among US carriers. There is no room for nationalism when you've got stockholders breathing down your neck to turn a profit. Can you imagine UA operating JFK-LAX with a 744? When they've got every major US airline to compete with on the NYC-LAX route? Not a chance. Used to be that there weren't so many transcont. flights from east coast to west and therefore people had to connect through JFK or ORD and could sustain a 747. Now there are non-stops from every podunk city in the East to LAX. BDL, EWR, BOS, IAD, CLT, and soon Jet blue will offer non-stop to Long Beach. Just too much competition. Or not enough, depending on how you see it.

Don't forget that America West flew 747's for a while as well.

Another little known fact: Alaska Airlines ordered and then canceled the Boeing 747-400.

Are you suggesting that US carriers should buy the 747 just for patriotic reasons? Would you also want the large cruise lines to buy their ships from US shipyards?
None of them do at the present time. In fact the large cruise lines that sail fron the US, ie: Carnival, RCCL, Princess, Holland America, Celebrity etc. are foreign lines.

How about the fact that the largest selling cars in the US are Toyota and Honda. Are the people who buy them being unpatiotic?

The US airlines are going to do what makes economic sense which is to buy the aircraft that best meets their needs.

The Alaska order was for a -100 in the early days of the 747. At the time the only route they could have operated it on was ANC-SEA. Their brains kicked in long before building started and the order was cancelled.
America West ordered 4 -400s though.

To MattD and the others - dont forget airlines are a business, and no carrier is going to fly an aircraft that does not make sense for its route system, regardless of where it is built. The US carriers simply do not need the capacity that the 744 offers, except for certain long haul intercontinetnal routes and occassionaly an inter-hub flight (ie, UA DEN-SFO). As stated above, almost every major US carrier purchased the 747 when it was introduced, only to realize that they were impossible to keep full on most routes and a cost a fortune to operate. In this day and age of hubs and frequent departures, the 747 would be a burden to most US carriers.

I, for whatever reason, always find a flight on 747 to be a bit special, as a child, I loved flying the National 747-100s between JFK and MIA.

The only domestic route on a 747 I can think of is LAX-IAD and IAD-LAX on UA as part of thier "Round the World" flights. SAA flies a 744 on FLL-ATL and Aerolineas Argentinas on JFK-MIA, QF flies one on JFK-LAX, and, while not truly domestic, Cathay Pacific flies a 744 on JFK-YVR (and is allowed to carry passengers on just that leg) but, of course, QF, AR, and SA can't carry passengers between just those two cities. When AA, DL, and everyone operated 747s, popular routes included MIA-JFK, JFK-ORD, ORD-LAX, LAX-JFK, JFK-SFO, and flights between hubs and Hawaii. I can't think of any 747 routes on NW today. Anyone?

UA still operates 744's on UA1 and UA2 routes.They also recently used to operate SFO-ORD and vice versa.Also used to put one into LAS from ORD.

I wish they used them more domestically,they are the only planes of theirs I haven't flown on (I missed out on a DC-10 due to thier retirement)

Northwest I believe still uses the 747 between DTW and MSP and SEA. They used to operate one between PHX and DTW and may still operate that flight with one or a DC-10. NWA has a few more 747's than UAL but UAL does operate far more -400's than NWA.

The only domestic 747 in service with NWA is the HNL runs from MSP. These are rotated between the DC10 and the 747 dependant upon the time of year.
