China Airlines & Northwest Airlines

Hmmm, as far as I know Northwest does not have any alliance with any Asian airline, could it be posible that CI will join alliance with NW and KLM? What do you guys think? I hope it'll happen as none of the airlines in Taiwan r in any alliance (Eva Air and China Airlines), this is kindda sad! Political problem again?!

CAL, Northwest in talks on cargo alliance

China Airlines (CAL) and Northwest Airlines are in discussions to form a wide-ranging cargo alliance.

CAL president Christine Tsung says that no paperwork has yet been signed on a tie-up but both sides are seriously studying proposals. "We are looking at a cargo alliance with Northwest," Tsung says, adding that the cargo divisions of both carriers have established task forces.

She says a partnership would allow both airlines to expand their networks, particularly for Northwest in Southeast Asia. The carriers would still compete in some areas, however.

Northwest and CAL have been seen as potential partners for some time. Early last year, amid speculation that it was seeking to take an equity stake in CAL, Northwest said it had no intention to do so but that the two had held talks "regarding potential areas of commercial co-operation".

From the perspective of passenger flight operation, CI is not an attractive partner. From the perspective of cargo flight operation, CI is a very attractive partner. At this time, I wouldn't automatically extrapolate this potential cargo alliance as a prelude to passenger service alliance.

KLM is currently operating codeshares with Malaysia, or else Malaysia is flying Fokker 50s on European routes they leased from KLM and forgot to paint  Smile

Don't know how deeply involved they are in each others operations on a larger scale than that, but it gives the KLM/NWA alliance an Asian partner.

Now (seemingly) involved:
- KLM
- NWA
- Transavia
- Malaysia
- Kenya airways (also operating codeshares with KLM)
I wish I were flying

I forgot to mention, NW has codeshares with Japan Air System and Air China. It also has, or will soon have, codeshares with MAS.

Northwest has the codeshare with JAS and Air China. MAS will also join soon.

In addition, NW and JAL have already formed a cargo alliance.

I know that NW has code share with JAS and Air China, but they don't have close alliance with any Asian airlines right? I mean in like the Star or Oneworld, or even close relationship such as NW and CO.

Dynkrisolo, I dun understand why u said that CI is not a good partner on PAX but not Cargo? Just curious, really appreciated for the information!  Smile

With CI's safety record, it could be a liability for the partner airlines. After KE's B747 crashed in Guam, DL had to quickly distance itself from KE and suspended all the codeshare with KE. Although I beileve CI is trying to improve its safety record, the recent news of a near collision at CLK with an MU MD-90 would not help their cause to repair their badly damaged image. In addition, CI's Asian network is mediocre. It would be more valuable to a US partner if direct link between Taiwan and China is allowed. CI's Asian network would provide very little value to a European partner due to Taiwan's geographical location.

On the cargo side, CI's record is quite clean. It has a very sizable and profitable cargo operation. I believe they are the second or third largest in Asia behind KE and possibly SQ.
