2 Bwia L1011's In The Dessert

I was talking to one of the manager of BWIA (I don't know which department) and he said that N3140D ferried to the dessert and then they removed the engines, brought it back to Piarco, put it on 9Y-TGN and ferried it to the dessert for retirement. It would be sad to see them there but hopefully someone can take pictures of them and post it on the site for us.

I ate a BWIA L1011 after dinner!Mmmmmm I love those L1011's. Smile/happy/getting dizzy ( it's desert, not dessert)

Yeah its sad to see them go. Atleast this means that the L-1011 replacement is arround the corner.

For an airline w/o any money; it was weird hearing a BWIA radio ad the other day here in Philly. They were advertising their service out of NYC and MIA. They spent money here but dont even fly to PHL!!

That is indeed sad. I was at POS last week Thursday and was able to walk past 9Y-TGN on the ramp near to the BWIA hangars. She looked a bit dumpy and worn out and was engineless. The last time that I passed by the airport 1 day later she was still there.

So BWee has made good their talk of retiring 2 of the TriStars. What they will replace them with remains to be seen but their cash flow problems are likely to hold them up for a while. Meanwhile the sun sets on an era of Caribbean aviation.

These old birds really worked.. i remember riding them to JFK.. was it FLight 424...? HM i would really miss then.. Lets see what the 21st centruy has to offer our caribbean airlines..

Don't you agree that a fleet of MD-83 and L1011 was a great choice at the time?
There is something special about planes....

Captaink, I will strongly agree. BWIA's MD83s have been very effective serving the Caribbean, MIA and even YYZ routes - their combination of extended range and typical DC9 ruggedness and fast turn-around have ensured a long and successful career with BWIA. 4 of the type remain but I cannot say how much longer for - the last leases expire next year. 1 was returned earlier this year and over the previous 5 years 4 others left the fleet.

The TriStars offered the flexibility of long-range with the ability to handle 1 or 2 hops before the long leaps to JFK, YYZ and LHR and their large holds enabled BWee to handle the growing cargo trade to those cities. Now the exporters are complaining of the limited cargo space on the 737-800s.

Too bad but the price of progress is always high.

The final two BWIA L1011-500s will be retired on the 15th October...

The retirement of BWIA's L1011s is sad for me. Now the only L1011s I see coming into YYZ are Air Transat's. I'll never forget the day in 1993 (probably 18 February) when I was coming home from school. I saw it soar peacefully across the still cloudy sky - the L1011 was already an uncommon sight back then for me. It seemed partly brown to me, surely BWIA, but back then, I imagined it to be a middle eastern airline. I found a picture a few years later of a similar Libyan Arab livery, but they didn't have L1011s. Finally, probably in 1996, I found out about BWIA, and then they were flying it here again. But now it's gone...

At least the BWIA 737s have a cool livery.
