Domestic Series From Airbus And Boeing

Mon Jun 04, 2001 9:04 pm

Is it possible for airlines to order other domestic aircrafts from Boeing or Airbus, other than the 747-Domestic?

Wouldn't the A330/A340 domestic be useful in Japan or SE-Asia?

Does Airbus offer any domestic series at all?

Maybe they'll consider a domestic A380 if the program is very successful. I don't think (and mind you I'm not a technical expert) that an A340 domestic would serve much of a purpose as I believe the attractiveness of this plane is not so much capacity, but rather range. Also, there's not the kind of capacity difference between the A330 and A340 that there is between the 744 domestic and the 777-200. Therefore, since many airlines use the A330 on very short flights (I flew TG from BKK-Chiang Mai on an A330) and it works well, a dom. A340 wouldn't be particularly useful. But, that's mostly common sense talking rather than technical expertise.

Yes i agree, A340 is not meant for domestic use. It will not be efficient. But A330 can be used though. Qantas plans to use A330 on its domestic routes with option to use it on regional destinations. I believe that A330 can serve as domestic a/c as well.
As for A380, if memory serves me correctly, airbus has been trying to pitch A380 to Japanese market for high density domestic route.

A340 wouldn't be efficient on short routes with four engines, but the A330 and perhaps the A380 can be used on short routes.

The 747D aircraft were designed/built with the very specific Japenese market in mind. The 747-400D can be converted to/from "normal" standards, while, to my understanding, the 747 Classics cannot.

I do not think that the A330/340 have enough seating capacity for the Japanese routes, but I think Airbus will come up with a version of the A380 if the Japenese carriers are interested. This could be a very big market for the A380, where all of the discussions about whether or not the A380 is "too big" simply do not apply.

In a 2 class "domestic" configuration, with 32" in Economy and 40" in Business, and without the extra galleys and lounges of the international version, the A380 could carry as many as 700-800 people? Thats a lot of passengers!

Domestic A330's and A340's would never work. Maybe an A380 though. Boeing has already captured the Asian domestic markets with 777-300's and 744D's.

The larger A380 (what´s that, -800) could carry 990 pax in a one class layout.
Mind you the two class 747-400 carries 569 and the one class 747-300 over 600 (624?)...
