Its Amazing What You Can See Through An Attic Wdw

Tue Jun 05, 2001 5:36 am

I live about 25 miles away from Manchester Airport. I've been living at my present home for the last 11 years, but today I noticed something, which I thought was amazing. It may sound a bit weird at first but you will soon get the picture.

Hundreds of planes fly past our house, as it is in the landing path of most planes arriving at MAN.

We have a window on the roof of our house, an attic window actually. Well today, I climbed up and had a look through the top. A distinct Monarch 757 flew past and so I followed its path. It took a wide semi-circle turning, went out of sight for a few minutes and then headed straight. After a few miles or so, it started to descend. From now on I could just about make out the shape of the plane, and the white fuselage as the sun was reflecting onto the body.

Slowly, it descended further to an extent, what appeared to me had landed onto a runway ! And to my surprise I had figured out that this was the runway of Manchester Airport !

The funny thing about this incident is that I never realised that we could actually view Manchester Airport from our home, as we live 25-30 miles away. The planes which fly past our house, are identifiable very easily i.e. airline, tail fin, aircraft.

I remebered my next door neighbour once mentioning that he could view landings and taking offs at MAN through a telescope !

I looked at other planes and they repeated the same landing pattern. On the opposite direction, it seemed as though planes were taking off. To what I suppose must have been the new second runway. Again, I am judging this by the white fuselage, which was very mi-nute in size (i have a good eyesight!).

Weird isn't it  Nuts

Anyone got similar stories or incidents which they would like to share.

I live about 7 miles from MSP. I look out my bedroom window, and watch planes fly away from the airport, turn around, and head over the river onto the runway. It's called a procedure turn. I can see the aircraft touch down on the runways, and I can also see taxiing aircraft with my telescope.

GF-A330 - Surely you can't see the runway at MAN from your house if you live 25 miles away!?!?! That is the equivelent of living in Stoke-on-trent!

Only a rail yard seperated me from Dorval's main runways in Montreal. I could hear the roar of the jets all day long, and if it ever landed at Dorval, I probably saw it heading in. Of course this was only from the ground floor of our building, I can just imagine the view those on the 8th (top) floor had. They could most likely see the aircraft touchdown and taxi to the gate.

I don't live there anymore, now I'm directly under the flight path for FLL.

When I lived in Federal Way, WA which is about 20 miles south of SEA, the plane's path was right to the side of my house, and they were always very low, especially when in the landing pattern. But I remember a long time ago following one of the planes that was landing to as far as I could see them, then I turned my binoculars away slightly further south and noticed a jumbo climbing out of SEA. I had never known I could actually see the planes take off out of SEA, but after that I always looked all the way down there, and always saw very faintly each aircraft after about 20 seconds of being airborne. There were especially clear when it was a 727, or 732 taking off because of the smog trail they left behind.

EGGD,

It depends where he lives and how he is judging the distance - as the crow flies or by road.

If he lives in the hills above Glossop, or around Mottram, if he lives around Hartshead, Watersheddings, even parts of Holcombe Brook, and the edge of Winter Hill near Horwich it is possible, on a clear day, to see aircraft touching down at MAN

ive been going to my couisns house for years and they live a few miles from an airport.
one day i went to the upstairs of thier house and decided to look out the window.... i never realized that thier house overlooks a valley- and in this valley....THE AIRPORT yyou could clearly see every inch of the tarmac and runways. its only a small airport with no scheduled service but i had a nice afternoon of playing air traffic controller.
very cool!

Come in EGGD I know its MAN cos there's no other airport around !

It is a high rea where I live. All you can see is countryside from where I am looking. And on the other side is Manchester City.

Remember its 25 miles away by road. But by observation, it meets the eye.

You should come round one day and then judge for yourself.

P.s. non of the airport terminal, apron is visible. Just the actual planes hitting the earth.

I think I should buy myself a telescope for a closer look.

Atleast I'll have double uses for it !

I used to live directly across the street from the
25 runways at LAX. I got great views of the takeoffs
and taxiing. The noise was incredible...you have to
completely adjust your lifestyles as to how you watch
TV or have a conversation. I could always tell when
a fully laden Jumbo jet would go by just by the sound and the fact that the whole room rattled. Talk about
spotters heaven!!!! Those 2am 747F's to NRT could
wake the dead....

I live about a mile east of MDW, so I can easily see aircraft on short finals to runway 31C as well as see them on finals to 22L and taking off and turning. It's pretty cool to sit on my porch with my scanner listening to takeoff and landing clearances and then see the actual aircraft fly by/away.

My cousins live about 30 minutes South of O'hare(Downers Grove). All day and night you can hear and see the planes coming and going. They just moved down the street, so there old house(4 blocks away) faced North!! With a big living room window! So, at night, we would sit in the living room and see the lights of a/c circling/holding/etc!!! The living room! Now, their new house faces South, so you have to be outside to see the planes:-( . But it is still nice!
Did anyone know that from the top floors of the John hancock Center, and especially the Sears Tower observation decks, you can see the runways of Midway, and watch all operations from 1,000+ feet up! Of course, it must be a clear day. Next time your in Chicago, give it a try!

I never understood how a pilot can report the field in sight when he's on a 9 mile final when I can never see that far......

Last Sunday I was at CLK and could see planes landing and departing from Macau !!. You can't see the airport because they are both on sea level so the curve of the earth makes it look like they land on water !!

In the afternoon I saw a 5Y 744F depart Shenzhen airport, climb and make a left turn along the border with Hong Kong before going north again. First time I've ever seen a Shenzhen departure climbing out from CLK.

Macau is about 50 km from Hong Kong !!

Mmm...I cant see NCL but I do see the Gill Airways ATRs flying from NCL to BHD.
But the nearest airport to me is CAX, I see Cessna's, occassional Biz-jets and I have seen BA DH8,ATR a/c and Gill a/c divert to CAX from NCL when NCL and MME were closed by fog.
Apart from that, niothing to see, apart from high-flying a/c.
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!
