Northwest Jet Makes Emergency Landing In Tokyo

TOKYO (AP)--A Northwest Airlines Corp. (NWAC) passenger jet made an emergency belly landing at Tokyo's international airport after experiencing landing gear problems Tuesday, an airport spokesman said.
The incident forced the airport to shut down its only runway and suspend all flights, said Narita Airport spokesman Minoru Abe.

Northwest Airlines flight 28, headed to Tokyo from Manila, notified the airport that its landing gear was stuck and the runway was cleared, he said.

It wasn't known how many passengers were aboard, but Japan's Kyodo News service said there didn't appear to be any injuries.

Northwest Airlines officials couldn't be reached for comment

Why have the flight land at Narita, and cause a huge headache for airport officials, couldnt it land at some other less busy japanese airport, or is there no such thing?

Yah, KIX is pretty close too.

Sometimes it is very hard to say. NWA may not have engineers and machanics in other arpts to fix the landing gears. ATC has to let NW28 land upon request.

good point about the mechanics!
But Narita is so busy, wouldnt it cause absolute kaos to have it closed for 1.5 hrs!!!!!!
It just seems strange to me, also would an aircraft landing on a runway with no wheels cause some damage to the runway surface?? Has Naritia opened its other runways yet, the parallel, or crosswind one?

Was it a 747-400 or -200?

I believe that it should be a 742 cuz NWA usually use 742 for intra-SE Asian flight. NWA uses 744 for most trans-pacific flights.

I am not sure about this tho, just some guess.

It doesnt even say it was a 747! But from nwa.com it says that MNL to NRT is a 744, and NRT to SFO is a 742.....strange

If it would have been a belly-landing, it would be on cnn by now. But it isn´t.

It was definatly a B747. I heard only one side of the main landing gear was stuck and that it had an engine strike.
No injuries were reported.

One of these wrecks did this before at Tokyo. I wish NW would get these planes in order or buy some new planes. I had the `joy' of flying on 4 NW 742's and they are not the best !!. One of the aircraft I flew on wa N612US, I real old timer .

N612US is the oldest in NWA's fleet. It should be 30yrs old by now.

It was a -400 and the right main gear did not come down, the doors opened but the gear was not out of the bay. Just saw the landing on the news.

Did you know that NW have little NW logos on the wheel hubs ????

According to a local news web where I live, there were 395 passengers and 15 crew members onboard. One of the five landing gears didn't come down but the four that were okay managed to sustain the weight of the airplane.

Yesterday, another airplane from Northwest Airlines made an emergency landing at Narita Airport after an engine failure was reported by an indicator. There were 295 onboard.

NW did well with their aircraft change.
They substituted the onward flight to SFO with
a 747200 and are expected only one hour late there.
Most other airlines would have had a long delay due
to aircraft availability even at their home base

According to Japanese media, Tokyo's Narita airport was shut down from 1.27pm to 2.48pm (Local time), due to this emergency incident.

The 747-400 carried 409 passengers and crews.

Actually, Northwest had several emergency landings in the past years. They once land at Sendai before, where there is no NW's personnels over there.

I would think that they should have diverted to a smallere airport but the safety services may not be as good. KIX would be worse since they would have to get the thing on a ship just to get it off of the airport.

Rather than blasting the airline, I think congratulations are in order for the flight crew for bringing the aircraft back safely and without injuries.

Compared to most airlines, NWA has a fantastic safety history, even with one of the oldest fleets in passenger service. Considering how relatively minor theses incidents are, I think NWA is doing a great job maintaining their fleet.

How is that possible that one of the busiest airports in the world has only one runway????
Congratulation for the pilots!!! But i still think that NWA should retire many of their planes. I understand that maintnance in NWA is one of the best in the world, but god damn many of their planes are 30+!!!!! Some DC-9 and 747 should be in museum.

From the picture, this plane appears to be a 744. Retirement is not an issue in this particular case.

The reason why Narita only got 1 runway because the authorities were facing a dispute with the farmers regarding building the 2nd runway.

I think the dispute has ended, and the 2nd runway will open 2002.

For fatal accident rate

NWA got .42 in 1 million of flights
UAL got .50 in 1 million of Flights
KEA got 11.00 in 1 million flights.

NWA got a even higher record than UAL.

congrad.
