Aren't You Glad This Wasn't You?!?!

Tue Jun 05, 2001 5:37 pm

Quite a dilemma, huh?

How do you suppose he got into this predicament??

There's a low-flying jet on the right of the picture (B737 I think), so he (or she) must have been pretty close to an aerodrome.

Anybody have a clue as to HOW on Earth they retrieved this plane??

Isn't this a pic of the Cessna that crashed into wires right off the end of the runway at Renton a few years back? I imagine the 737 in the pic is inbound to SeaTac.

No idea how the pilot managed to get it where it was, but I gather a fairly big crane was needed to get it down again.

Last I heard, the city was sueing the pilot of damage to the wires, and the pilot was sueing the city for putting the wires where they were.

So let me get this straight. This dumbo "pilot" is suing because of "inconveniently placed wires" that 1. Probably saved his life and 2. HE crashed into?

Man, talk about rooting for the City on this one.

This guy has no business being in a cockpit.

Some years ago,a Cessna 206 seaplane ended up in a similar situation here in Norway.Difference was that it ended up in power lines spanning a fjord some 300 feet above the sea.Pilot was lifted out by helicopter, but they had to call the Army, who shot the plane down with a cannon!

Just one more thing though, it is quite common to see light a/c get tangled up in power lines. They really can be killers and you have to watch out for them!

OK,

Did a search on the rego N39AA at:

http://nasdac.faa.gov/asp/fw_fids.asp

The accident was at Seattle Boeing Field, not Renton (sorry!) on 04/09/1998.

This is what it says in the accident summary:

UPON LANDING AIRCRAFT PILOT LOST CONTROL (UNKNOWN REASON) AND RECOVERY POSITIONED AIRCRAFT PERPENDICULAR FROM RUNWAY, HEADING WEST OVER A STREET AND HEAVY INDUSTRIAL AREA. AIRCRAFT FLAPS WERE LEFT IN THE LANDING POSITION AND COULD NOT CLEAR POWER LINES. AIRCRAFT RECOVERY FROM YAW/ROLL DURING LANDING AND EXECUTION OF MISSED APPROACH GO AROUND NOT FOLLOWED IN ACCORDANCE WITH AIRCRAFT FLIGHT MANUAL AND PILOT FLIGHT TRAINING PROCEDURES.

Pilot was apparently a Commercial Pilot Flight Instructor with 2400hrs total time, 1200 on type.

Oh well!  Smile

For anyone in the Seattle area at the time will remember the continuous live coverage of the incident. At one time the authorities had to tell the news helicopters to move back because they were causing turbulance and putting the rescue in jeopardy. It was quite a story.
