B747-146B/SR/SUD

Why is this JAL 747 configured with a long upper flight deck like the 743 and 744 but it really is a 741? Was this used for short, high passenger routes? Do any other airlines have this? Thanks!

These are the only 2 747-100s with a SUD conversion.
They are used on domestic routes.

Hi there,

Those 747-100 SR's were retrofitted for JAL and ANA for near-max capacity. Boeing offered the retrofit after the -300 came onto the market.

No. This is not correct.

Both JAL 747-146B were built with stretched upper deck. Hence the B notation.

Making it the only 2 -100 in the world that was built with stretch upper deck. The rest were retro fitted later on.

Still not correct... The 'B' designation on these 741's does not mean the SUD conversion. Saudia also has 741B's and they don't have SUD.

This is very interesting. I had no idea that JAL had any of their B741s converted to EUDs (In Australia we refer to the 743 and 744 models as Extended Upper Deck a/c, reason being someone pointed out that in medical terminology SUD stands for Sudden Unexplained Death! But I digress.)
I recall a pictorial in some aviation mag years ago about the EUD mod being made to some KLM B742s and didn't think or know of any other carriers doing the same with theirs. It doesn't surprise me however to discover that a Japanese carrier made use of this option. I flew on an ANA B742 (with the standard 'bubble top') several years ago and was told by one of the crew that the plane carried over 500 pax in an all Y/C configuration! That blew me away at the time!

When I saw this topic,I remembered seeing this in one of my books. I found it!! In 'Jetliner History' Boeing 747 Desigh and Development from 1969. It says that 'In 1985 JAL ordered 2 747-100B's with the stretched upper deck designated as a -100B(SR/SUD).It seats 25 business and 538 economy'.

Just for the record. 2 JAL -100s were converted to the SUD configuration, along with 10 KLM -200s. 2 of the KLM have since been converted to freighters

KLM are 742s. Refered to in schedules as 747/SUD

Pretty interesting topic. After looking through Bill Harm's the only other carriers to have the SUD coversion done were KLM, who had all of their GE powered 742 converted, and Air France (presumably these were ex-UTA planes) who has 2 747-2B3-SUDs. The JAL 747SR-146B-SUDs are JA8170 and JA8176... both delivered in 1986, which has to make them the younger 747-100s out there.

On their home page, KLM claim that their 742 SUDs are 743s.

2 of them are converted to freighters, two are all pax and 8 are combi's.

I have seen one of the B743 freighters.The plane still has the passenger windows.

Yes it does, but they are mostly covered up.
The upper deck has windows for the crew.

But does it really matter ? Not really.
Atlas also has former pax planes converted to freighters and there are still windows visible there....so.

KLM now owns two 206SUD freighters, five 206SUD combi's and two 206SUD pax, the third, PH-BUP, was just shipped it to MHV May 1st.

The SUD conversion was ordered by 3 airlines: KLM (10x 747-206Bs converted), UTA (2x 747-2B3Bs converted) and JAL (2x 747-146Bs converted), making a total of 14 747-100/200S converted to SUD.
It's interesting to note the history of KLM's PH-BUH and BUI. Born as regular's 747-206Bs, they were converted to SUD, and then to Freighters SD...making them the only SUD and Freighter converted 747s.
Someone said here that the JAL's aircrafts were produced new with the SUD, my information tells that the jumbos were latter converted, can someone confirm this?

Although they were bound to retire last december, They're still around.

Just found it.

PH-BUK arrived yesterday at AMS as KL0612 from ORD and departs tomorrow as KL0605 for SFO

PH-BUL arrived this morning at AMS as KL0612 from ORD and departed this afternoon as KL0873 for BOM

So they're still around.

Just for the record. The PH-BUL and the PH-BUK haven't been retired because KLM has retired the PH-BUP and the PH-BUR will be retired at the end of the summer schedule. Moreover, KLM seems to have some difficulties in selling both the BUK and the BUL as they are old and have a lot of flying hours and cycles.
