Qantas - "Impulse"

Wed Jun 06, 2001 9:57 am

Listening to my scanner last night, I noticed that the new Qantas 717's are still called "Impulse flight ..." , Why is that?

I heard tower say Impulse after the merge, however I never took notice of it until last night. Can someone tell me whats going on. Thanx

Impulse is only contracted to Qantas...they are still their own company, wich contracts out its services. Its the same as the other Qantas regionals. Eastern Australia is called for example eastern 123, or southern 123 for a southern Australia flight, even though they are all Qantas, or "Qantaslink". That probably explains why they have left Impulse as still being Impulse.

if you look on the online shcedules for Qantas, Impulse flights are now designated "QantasLink - Airconnex"....just a piece of trivia.....don't ask me where the "Airconnex" part came from

I went out and had a look at the QF painted B717's on Sunday at MEL. I had the air radio with me but didn't pick up on the "Impulse" call sign. However, I did notice the "Southern" call.

I have to say, I am becoming a real big fan of the B717's - maybe it is that rear engine thing?  Big thumbs up

I was talking to the manager of flight ops of Southern Australia just yesterday about the situation. She said that QantasLink is just a passenger thing. It really has no effect on any of the regional airline, who still oprerate their own aircrafts and manage their own operations. Its just that the aircraft is painted over and they have trouble identifying their own 146s or dashs when they come into MEL. So Impulse is just like a 6th Regional Airline of Qantas. But with their entrance, Southern has cut flights to certain destinations and are planning on expanding their network.

Thanx guys.
I'll look into it further when i go on my trip next week.
B727-200, I know what you mean, I was (AM) a HUGE B747-400 fanatic, but after the introduction of the 717's to Aus, I'm loving them. Clean flight deck design, quiet, with a sleek finish. Gotta love em.
