Well I guess the reason why SAN doesn't have decent service to Mexico is the same reason we at TIJ don't have enough service to the US even though much smaller cities in southern mexico have services some of the big US hubs. For the US airlines it makes sense to concentrate their operations at SAN and for most mexican airlines it's better to stay at TIJ, makes little sense to have 2 stations so close together.
About passenger numbers of San Diego residents driving south to fly south, hmmmm well I can't say for sure, from pure observation, it depends a lot on the route and airline, the AeroMexico flight to Havana on Saturdays is loaded with americans, but that doesn't count cause it's to Cuba
But usually, especially on flights to beach destinations you see a few americans on board, and also on business destinations like Mexico City there are always a few. So I'm sure San Diego contributes some to TIJ's passenger base, it may be troublesome to get here for some, but the trouble may be well worth it if you consider that by driving some miles south you have access to more mexican destinations than you would have from any other US city. And I am sure that it's the same the other way around, most Tijuana residents are not thrilled when they have to cross the border and drive to SAN or LAX to catch a flight to San Francisco, Las Vegas, or connections to Europe or Asia, everybody prefers driving 10-30 minutes to their local airport to having to spend 40 minutes or more driving to an airport across the border; but hey, maybe it's better than we might think, we in Mexico have relativley easy access to many US flights, and the people in San Diego have access to a great variety of flights all over Mexico.
Rojo: Are you sure they are building new jetways?? that would be really nice, I haven't been there since April, and I remember that one of the jetways on the B pier wasn't working, there always seem to be some jetways out of order. Ever since the airport was privatized things have been steadily improving, every time I visit things look a bit better, I really like the airport when it's not crowded
However the problem is not the jetways or remodelling, the problematic areas are the passenger waiting areas and ramp space wich are very insufficient at certain times, from around 10am to 3pm it is terribly crowded, last time I flew in we arrived just in time cause the next 2 planes that arrived had to wait in the taxiways for a gate to clear for at least 25 minutes, I certainly hope Azteca does not schedule their flights at peak times !!
