Opinions On Athens Venizelos

Sun Jun 10, 2001 10:29 pm

Having arrived in Athens a week ago (also my first trip to Athens Venizelos), I have to say I am not happy with the airport. I have yet to see the departure terminal, however friends have told me it has much to be desired. From the gate (arrived on Virgin Atlantic 1002), we had to walk soooo much to baggage claim it was not even funny. Then baggage claim was a free for all-being in Greece this was to be expected-but it seemed worse then Hellenikon! I believe that the airport also looks extremely out of place in the Greek Landscape, if anything it looks like a reincarnation of Munich Franz-Joseph Strauss. Many of my Greek friends tell me that Greece as a whole is not very satisfied with the airport as well.
Countrary to popular belief however, there was little traffic in and around the airport.
Anyone else have opinions on LGAV, if so what do you think the airport lacks in terms of facilities etc.

What am I hearing.....did you ever land at Jfk and had to walk to the baggage claim...i think I went through 10 escalators to get to it....The New athens airport is very clean and has the latest technologies....you dont have to take a cab across the airport to get a non OA flight anymore..and it is much safer.....expect many AMERICAN CARRIERS going to the new aiport because of SAFETY....Overall the airport is very nice and modern and this will help 2004 Olympics. The first thing you see when you arrive to Greece is the airport.....Why shouldnt the passengers have a a good impression of GREECE from the look of the Airport?...Landing in the old airport foreign people prob were thinkng WHAT A DUMP

I agree, I mean I am not giving the airport a failing grade or anything. Yes, it is a BIG improvement over the old Hellenikon airport, but if you ask me Venizelos does not give an accurate representation of Greece as you are implying. I also believe the airport is too big, I mean I came during the peak time of the afternoon when all the flights from Europe arrive, and there were soo many open gates. Well, as I said I am not bashing the airport, but the airport makes me feel like I am in a German airport run by a mob. And I am Greek too, and I realize that they needed a new airport for the Olympics etc, but they should have designed to fit the Greek Landscape a little better.

that is just my 2 cents worth

Let me add to what I was saying. My main concern was the amount of walking that had to be done to baggage claim. I realize that other airports have even larger distances to cover, but LGAV is a brand new airport, it should have been designed with the passenger in mind. Yes JFK has 10+ escalators to the exit, but JFK was designed many moons ago, and is a MUCH larger airport. Hence, it should have large distances. Venizelos, however is a much smaller airport, which should have smaller distances-if anything, it should have a tram or something that takes you from the gate to the arrivals hall.

Hello,

Olympic A-340, I guess you are right about the it not fitting greek architecture etc... Where did your flight arrive? Was it in the main pier area or in one of the satellite piers? If you arrive at one of the ends of Y at the new Hong Kong airport, you also have to do miles of walking. Firstly you must walk a few hundred metres (well with the help of moving walkways), then go down a relatively long escalator, before waiting a few minutes until you can board the train, 3 minutes of a train ride before going up another relatively long escalator. IMHO, an average person would have to count at least 15-20 minutes.

BTW, how was VS?

Well the A-321 on VS was very nice. I was in economy, but the first class looked FANTASTIC. I had a great flightcrew (all Greek), and I got to sit in the cockpit for a while, however I was not allowed to take pics for some reason. Great landing too. I arrived at 4:15 pm not on the main pier, but on the small terminal across from the main terminal. It is rectangular and has gates all around I believe.

The fact that you arrived at the satellite terminal explains why your walk to baggage claim was so long. Remember, however, that this is not the experience of every traveler as the gates connected to the main terminal are much closer to baggage claim and thus distances are also shorter.

Regarding the size of the airport, keep in mind that it was built with the future in mind not the present. It was built to not only accomadate present-day traffic but to accomadate future growth as well.

I departed from there on April 27th and I thought it was alright, except for that Olympic decided to use a remote stand unstead of an open gate (of which there were many).

I flew out of the airport (never into it) the second week is was open. A lot of walking, but I loved it. Fresh, modern and clean. The airport is really hoping they can lure more American carrier (currently only DL JFK-ATH). I could definitley see AA (from ORD or MIA), CO (from EWR), or UA (from JFK or IAD) coming within the next four years. Athens is a beautiful city. I loved it there.

LGAV is big compared to the old airport, with new facilities. It is clean and efficient. I only visited once to pick up a relative and there were some things that I didn't like. The arrivals area is very dark compared to the departures. There is a big road that lays above the arrival entrances, and still the glass used on the fround floor (arrivals) is dark and doesn't let enough light into the terminal. On the contrary, the departures level is bright and has a high ceiling. The other thing I didn't like was the existence of smoking areas that were cafeterias. There, it was the only place where i saw flies, because the smoke from dozens of people made the area warm and nice for the flies to go around!
I agree that the architecture could have been more 'greek' but the current architecture is based on the motto "less is more". It is very simple, but it's design looks weird for a greek landscape. The airport is still big for the current capacity, but the Olympics will bring it to it's zenith, when all gates will be full along with most remote stands. I am hoping that american carriers will start services to athens, especially after the Olympics. I also read that the airport aims in attracting more airlines, mostly the ones that used to have service to Athens in the 70s and 80s (Japan Airlines, Qantas etc.).
I am flying on Friday the 15th to Santorini with an ATR and I will add my further impressions.
