NWA Aircraft Orders

Tue Jun 12, 2001 7:54 am

Before I start the post, I want to say a few things. I mean in no way for this to be a "airbus v.s. boeing" war. I just want to ask a simple question that I dont seem to be able to come up with the answer on my own. So I please that some of you people dont try to get this post taken off because you are a cry baby. I just want a answer to this. so here it is:

It looks to me that NWA would rather pick airbus over boeing for there aircraft orders. For this like picking the A330 over the 777 and I am hearing now that to replace there 742 they are looking at the A340. It looks like instead of the 737 they buy the A320. I am not anti-airbus but I was just wondering why northest chooses airbus over boeing. any advanteges airbus has over boeing at this moment? thanks alot

I know they picked the A330 because the 777 is too large. They picked the A330 for Transatlantic routes. They replaced domestic DC-10s with 757-300. I'm not sure about the A320.

The previous post hit it right on with the 77 ans the A320 won out cause it is the perfect plane for them. At the time th 737 didn't have the range that was needed. The A320 has fantastic range, so can be used as a direct replacement for the 727. The A319 can now replace the larger DC-9s and be used for growth. NWA is still ordering Boeings, they have 757-200s and -300s on order along with the 747-400s. They will continue to buy the best plane for their routes.

Did Northwest even consider the 767-400 variant?

Also, I guess I still don't understand replacing DC-10's with 757-300's. Now, replacing them with A330's, yes.

The 757-300s seem to fit a nitch that Northwest currently doesn't have.

P.S.: I think it all comes down to $ anyway.

Northwest are also considering the new version of the B757, the B757-200ER which would be used on flights from its Detroit hub. There was a topic on this a few days ago.

They are considering the A318 and the B717 to replace the DC-9s. Both seem to have an equal chance. Lets hope they order a DC-9 replacement before the A318 and B717 go out of production.  Big grin

More A330s will probably be used to replace the rest of the DC-10s.

The A340-600 seems to have the lead to replace the B747-200s but don't expect an order anytime soon.

They were often mentioned as a potential A380 customer but I somehow doubt it.

Northwest will get a mix of A346 and 744LR. They need to have 744's for the loads they get on some of their Pacific routes. Plus, if they want to expand their Pacific network from Detroit, they need a Long Range aircraft.

Aircraft orders are not placed on Boeing vs Airbus. They are placed on commonality to existing fleet, availability and by far not least, economics. Certain airline CEOs do have a preference and since they carry the big stick, they usually get their way.
I must confess that I have a preference to Boeing. Only because that's what I grew up with. Nothing to do with nationalistic BS. In fact, the most comfortable flight I've ever had was on a A300. I love them all.  Smile

I am actually really surprised Northwest did not order the A321

The 767 lacks the cargo capacity which is huge busniess for NWA. The main reason it has never been considered for international. The 757-300 carries as many as the 767, it is cheaper and burns less fuel so of course it won out there.
As for a DC-9 replacement the last fleet plan I saw went 7 years out and still only had 14 or so less DC-9s then now, I think you'll be seeing them for a long time to come.

NW probably would have ordered the A321, but it doesn't have the range of the 757-200 and therefore has less potential for longer routes than the 757. NW probably wants its 170 seat planes to have intercontinental range. Maybe some of its existing orders could be replaced with A321's like US did....

Well, I PERSONALLY have never been on an airbus, but my dad flies quite often, and he prefers the Airbus jets over the Boeing jets he flies on. Incedentally, he only flies Northwest, unless they don't go somewhere he needs to. HE says they are more comfortable, quieter, and just give a better flight. I will be on an A320 in September, and will know for myself then... Also, I have heard that the Airbus jets have a lower cost per seat to operate the aircraft, so they make more money..

The 320's are very nice aircraft. The funny thing is, the DC-9 pilots like to talk smack about how long their airplanes are going to last. I was talking with one the other day and he said "We're gonna be the ones bring the graveyard crews back from taking the A320's to the desert." Thought that was pretty funny.

I dont know where Teahan gets his info, but rumor has it from within the airline that the 777 is the most likely bet for the 742 replacement.

Neither the 742 nor the DC-9 replacements have been set in stone yet..and they wont be for a while.
