What Airline Is "Best" At Losing Your Luggage?

Wed Jun 13, 2001 9:53 am

That really is to say ........ Which airline do you think loses passengers bags the most?

Is there just one obvious choice here? Probably not. Everyone must have at least one horror story to relate on this worst of pax nightmares......"I'm sorry sir, but it appears your luggage didn't make it." (What awful words.)  Smile

That honor belongs exclusively to Delta. I've flown American, United, Northwest, Continental, US Airways, Southwest, TWA, America West, Aloha, Hawaiian, Swissair, Thai, KLM, Egypt Air, Qantas, Lan Chile, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Varig, Air France, South African Airways, and the defunct Eastern and merged Southern and Republic, but only Delta has ever lost my bags, and they've done it THREE times.
I'm not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.

The airline didn't lose my baggage but someone who was on my AA flight from DFW-IAD accidently toook my bag which was identical to his (but mine had a name tag with MY NAME, not his) That person was lazy and didn't check his name tag to make sure it was his. But once all the bags were offloaded from the conveyor belt, I found that persons bag which it was EXACTLY same as mine but I checked the name tag but it wasn't mine. It was that person who took my bag so I jot down his name, address, and phone number and gave this guy a call and so did AA. I went home while this guy had to drive a nice 60+ miles back to IAD and return my bag to AA and AA sent my bag to my door like 5 hours later. Boy was I pissed at the airport for not checking peoples bag. I mean ANYONE can easily take someone elses bag.

United and AA but the luggage always appears in the next couple of days. Also once Mexicana lost my bags but they came in the afternoon flight later that day.

I don't think it's the airline that is inherently bad in these cases (no pun intended)... it's their choice for hub airports.

UA had huge problems when Denver's new airport opened - DL always has huge problems at ATL - AA at ORD.

See my point? It's the fact that they have SO many flights out of their hubs. Of course DL has more out of ATL than any other airline has out of any other hub... so maybe that's why they are so awful. (I don't pay for tickets, so I can't complain, but they lost my baggage thru ATL twice in the last six months - now it's Hand baggage only)

Delta has been the best at keeping my bags on all my scheduled flights. I have NEVER lost a bag with Delta and I think Delta has the best baggage handling procedures in the business. Air France is the worst! We were in France for 3 days (half of our trip) without our bags. My dads medicine, our clean clothes, everything was lost. We had a total of 4 and 2 they delivered in the early morning hours and the other 2 (mine was in the last 2) they arrived at about midnight.

AA. My dad came home from the Bahamas only to find out in CMH that his luggage was damaged and a nice camera lens was stolen from the bag....

Now we have an interesting conflict..........

Tekelbery claims Delta has excellent baggage service....and Dvk says Delta is absolutely the worst for lost bags.

Delta must have good days and bad days.....like everybody else.

Air New Zeland sent ours to the wrong destiniation.

Welling to Brisbane, one was put on the Qantas to Sydney. Went to lost baggage and told them, checked in bags at international, big no no, went to domestic terminal then flew Ansett to Cairns, our other 2 bags missed the flight.
We did get them all back.

Also I heard once that a few years back Air New Zealand managed to loose someones kidney!!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Also be nice to check in attendents they can change the bags destination easily.

Spirit lost my bag because they use a small lousy luggage tag that must have falled off my bag or been taken off by accident. Its not the standard black and white computer print out, it looks like a little ID tag the airlines give out for free. Last time I flew spirit FLL-LGA my bag ended up at JetBlue at JFK with no tags. Explain that!

In my opinion it isn't the airline, but a certain airport with IATA code LHR who's best at loosing your luggage.

Sabena. They lost my baggage 3 times in just 5 flights !!! Since then I only take carry-on when travelling with them. Second place - Air France - 2 times.

American Airlines lost my baggage once (after more than 50 flights) when going from Miami to Sao Paulo. But they were nice and gave me $500 "credit" to buy clothes and toiletries. I bought them with my credit card, send them the reciepts and they reimbursed my expenses. They also addeded extra miles to my frequent flier account. The baggage arrived 3 days later.

To all: US, in any of its' forms. I travel on mostly short to medium distance trips. Often(sigh), that dictates US. They have lost my bags, tools, equipment and/or luggage more times than ALL the others combined. They are the worst carrier in my experience since the demise of Eastern(the premiere "awful" carrier).
Fortunately, the advent of JetBlue, Southwest, Midway and Airtran to BUF has opened new options. Unfortunately, the downturn in business has virtually eliminated trips in the last 6 mos. Where are those Airtran 717's?

BMI lost my bag between LHR and Madrid a few weeks ago. When I finally got to the front of the queue at the service desk in the MAD arrivals hall, the guy said:

"Ah. BMI always loosing many baggages. Will be find soon. No worry."

But I did [worry], and I was right too... it took them two days.

I think it boils down to this, depends on the airline and on the day. Same with the debates over in flight service we see on here etc. One day, a United FA is having a horrible day and gets strict vice cheery when telling a passenger to turn of his cell phone...the same day Bob flew United and the service was impeccable.

But for the record.....ah heck, I've never lost a bag.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Cheers!

Continental (back in the pre-Bethune days), Pan Am I and US Airways have all lost my bags. They make up a total of the 10% of carriers I have flown. On the other hand, Delta (Which is about 85%) has never lost one of my bags. I think my little elite ff tags though work in my favour though...they don't like having one of their better customers get mad.

Only time my baggage was lost was on United.

Since I started dating my boyfriend (an FA @ NW), I purchased the same luggage that NW issues to it's FA's. It's all carry-on size (22" rollerboard and small tote bag). I can fit a week's worth of clothing anf toiletries in the two bags and can carry them on the plane!

I must suggest this to anyone who flies a lot! You avoid the baggage claim, and usually long lines at the car rental counter, or ground transport lines!

I think it happens in all airlines, including one of the best airlines, Singapore Airlines!!!

Although it did not happen to me, I know 3 cases where SQ lost someone's luggage. The first one happened to my dad, on SIN-SYD flight, his luggage went to MEL instead.

The second one happened to my friend who took SQ flight FRA-CGK via SIN, his luggage was 'left' in SIN.

The last one happened to my Aunt, who took SIN-AMS flight, and guess what.....her luggage stayed in SIN.

In all cases, SQ was quick to locate the missing luggage, and to give compensation......

So, I guess all airlines, good or bad, have their "bad" luck too.........

I've never lost a bag, but recieved damage on luggage from British Airways. I have also heard that United frequently looses baggage.

It is not required that the airline or the airport check peoples bags and everyone who picks one up. Do you think we have time to sit there and go thru some 200 passengers 300 bags off of every flight? I realize someone can sit there and steal bags and like in your case take the wrong one, but that would just take way too much time and personell to sit there and check everyones bags and so on. As very little as that actually happens that someone takes the wrong bag...I guess thats why they dont. So I guess people just have to live with it.

Delta was the worst. Delta has lost my bags 5 times! Once send to the wrong destination. I went ORD-ATL to visit my cousin and my bag was send to SLC. It came to ATL 5 days later. Delta is really bad with luggage. The other 4 times it was lost for good.
