KLM And MAS To Announce Partnership

Thu Jun 14, 2001 12:02 am

According to Dutch newspaper NRC (comparable with Financial Times), KLM and MAS will announce on Saturday their cooperation in Kuala Lumpur. KLIA will be KLM's asian hub, AMS the european hub. KLM won't take a financial stake into MAS.
KLM and MAS will integrate their flight operations and start joint promotions.

Furthermore, it is also announced that Schiphol will invest into KLIA. Not a major suprise..

Here's the link to the article, but unfortunately, it is in Dutch...

How different will this arrangement be from what KLM and MAS already have right now?

Or will we see MAS withdrawing from European airports like CDG, MUC, FCO, MAN and ZRH in favour of a codeshare thru AMS? It's probably safe to assume MAS will retain LHR and possibly FRA.

Can't see KLM pulling out from any of their SE Asian destinations in favour of a codeshare thru KUL except possibly for MNL. Perhaps new codeshares to DPS, SUB, MES, BWN, SGN, HAN, PNH, RGN, CEB, BKI, KCH, PEN, LGK?

Airpearl - you seem to be coming around to the idea - those cities you mentioned are being discussed. However many seem to have lost the plot about alliances...it doesn't matter if both KLM and MAS serve similar destinations - You don't see Thai and SQ deciding which ONE will serve SIN-BKK nor SQ and UA deciding which ONE will serve which SIN-North American routes.

KLM, NW and MAS integrating into an alliance would mean - passengers will benefit from extended schedules and connecting services. Eg. Someone travelling from Glasgow to KL and then on to Sydney before returning via HKG - could fly only with KLM and MAS for the entire journey by routing GLA-AMS-KUL-SYD-KUL-HKG-AMS-GLA.

It would be ideal for KLM and MAS to create an 'Airbridge' between their 2 hubs and they have already started doing so - but key point-to-point services for either airline does not necessarily need to suffer as a result.
