You Might Be Freighter Trash If...

Sun Jun 06, 1999 12:50 pm

You might be freighter trash if...

1. If your airplane was getting old when you were born.

2. If ATC advises you of smoother air at different altitudes and you don't care.

3. If you've lost 45% of your hearing because the aircrafts soundproofing was removed to save weight

4. If your company's call sign is "Pork Rib"

5. If ground controllers ask you where your parking for the night and you tell them Jurassic Park and they know where your talking about.

6. If your plane has more than 4 faded company logos on it.

7. If you wear the same shirt to work for a week and nobody complains.

8.If airlines wait for you to "test" the squall line first.

9. If your director of operations mysteriously increases your aircrafts max TO weight during the holiday season.

10. If you don't accept vectors around weather.

11. If you call the hotel and the van driver has no idea where on the airport you are.

12. If other airlines post guards on their aircraft anytime your mechanics are on the ramp.

13. If your company declares bankruptcy to clean out the seniority list.

14. If fuelers require cash before pumping.

15. If the same model of airplne you fly can be seen at museums.

16. If the differences section of your flight manual is different than the systems section.

17. If mothers tell their children to stay away from you in terminals because you look like you live there.

18. If the concession in the terminal locks up the free popcorn machine because you plan to make a meal out of it.

19. If you think a room with more than 3 vending machines is a food court.

20. If you think ALPA is dog food.

21. If real airline captains come to look at your airplane and say " I flew one of these when I was young".

22. If most ground based transmitting stations for your onboard navigation systems have been permanently dismantled.

23. If 10% of your basic operating weight is paint and patches.

Hope you enjoyed humor at my expense!!

Very amusing!

I'd like to say though that I'd rather fly an old DC-8 cargo to exotic locations than fly for a regular airline.

The experience and adventure gained by flying the old cargo airliner must be much higher than just flying for Delta or something. Maybe the pay isn't as good but who cares, it's not money that matters, it's having a worth while life.

If the differences section of your flight manual is "thicker" than the systems section.

Pretty sad? I know many people who would voluntarily hack of vestigial body parts to have this as a first job. The funny thing about the list is that pilots who have had these jobs, and there aren't many who haven't, can go down the list and say "yeah that pretty much sums it up".

Unless you fly freight for UPS, Fed Ex, Atlas Or Challenge this is about says it all. We have captains that fly in undershirts and shorts. There are people in this business who believe unproffesionalism is an olympic sport and their striving for highest podium.

I've been in the simulator doing training flights with new hire F/0 who ddin't know what entry to use when entering a published hold. I've had captains start engines while I'm still doing my preflight walk around. You meet all sorts in the lower end of the business. You just have to remember never to lower your standards, and conduct yourself in a proffesional manner. This is only a stepping stone for most. The other 15% are the ones that can't go anywhere else for one reason or another.

25. When your plane pulls into the parking ramp and immedatily the ground handlers place buckets under the plane to catch all the fluid leaks.
