727...1,831 Or 1,832 Built?

Thu Jun 14, 2001 12:01 pm

Boeing's webpage says 1,831 delivered. Did they retain one for their own use? Some books/sources say that 1,831 were built, others say 1,832.

l/n 1832 (c/n 22938), a B727-2S2F, was delivered to Fed Ex as N217FE on 9-18-84.

The prototype, l/n 1 (c/n 18293), a B727-22, first flew on 2-9-63, and was delivered to UAL as N7001U on 10-6-64 and now belongs to the Museum of flight in Seattle.

This would lead one to believe that 1832 were built and delivered, but looking at my production list book, I do not see a l/n 2 which would mean only 1831 (the Boeing #) were built and delivered. Was the the l/n 2 airframe used for testing of sometype and never completed?

yes there is l/n 2: she was "delivered" March 3, 1963, first reg was N1784B, later changed to N72700. It was a prototype for Boeing, she was later scrapped.

I guess that explains the 1831/1832 problem - 1832 built, one of them (l/n 2) never delivered.

OK, so everything matches up then, 1832 total, 1831 delivered. My production list book shows l/n 2 first flew on 3/12/63 as N72700, was rt to N1784B in 1971, then rr back to N72700 in 1975 and broken up in 1978. It stayed with Boeing the whole time and was never delivered to an airline.
