Thu Jun 14, 2001 12:50 pm

from This Day (Lagos):

United Kingdom airline Virgin Atlantic, yesterday announced the commencement date for a new four-times-a-week service between London and Lagos.

From July 16, Virgin would offer services from London Heathrow Airport on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Fares from London will start at £499 ($690) including tax .

The airline said the fares were cheaper than the lowest fare currently available. Fares from Nigeria are to be announced soon.

The Heathrow flights will depart at 22.30 (11.30 pm) on all four days, arriving Lagos at 5.am the following morning.

Return flights from Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos are at 9.25 am on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and 9.15 am on Friday. Heathrow arrival times are 15.55 (3.55 pm) and 15.45 (3.55 pm) respectively. A Boeing 747-200 aircraft will operate the route and offer upper, premium economy and economy classes.

Virgin Atlantic Chairman, Sir Richard Branson, said: "I am delighted that, after several years of trying, our wish to serve the Nigerian market has finally come true. This market has cried out for competition for a long time."

Lagos is Virgin Atlantic's 22nd destination and its third African route. The airline began flying to Johannesburg in 1997 and Cape Town in 1999.

Will this mean with the increase in competition that BA will either resume their LHR-Lagos service or will they swap their daily 747-400 LGW-LHR. ITS supposed to be their most profitable route so I imagine to keep it that way theyll swap it to LHR. Any ideas?

The plane is simply one of many dry-leased from Air Atlanta. The Icelandic airline has really no involvement in the route at all.

The only crew that will be onboard are 2 VS cabin staff there to represent the company. I dont think BA will move their flight to LHR as this is the most profitable route for BA from africa and the nigerian passengers prefer to fly to LGW. Amazingly when BA was doing their daily flight from LGW to LOS and the daily flight from LHR to LOS with WT staff onboard the LGW service was still the busiest. This is an old Bcal route. Will VS eventually operate this flight in their own right-their own plane and all their crew?

Aussiestu,

In answer to your question, Virgin plan to take over the route in either October or at the latest November. The Air Atlanta aircraft will be "Virginised". It will look like a VS plane inside and outside. As you correctly point out there will be 2 Virgin reps onboard each flight.
