Do Airbus Builts Military Jets?

Thu Jun 14, 2001 1:43 pm

I'm not sure if this topic fits the Civil Aviation forum.

But I'm wondering do Airbus builts military jets? (like KC135)

The reason why I'm asking this Q, is because I saw this report.

Translated in English:
French and German government has announced that they'll order a improved-Airbus military-use transportation jet during the Le Bourget Air Show later this month. This was announced on June 12, during a conference between the 2 countries.

At least 9 countries are expected to order Airbus A400M Military-use transportation jet during the Air Show, which starts from June 16 to June 24.

Germany will be the largest customer for this jet. Germany has issued a statement that they'll buy 73 A400M. The total order for the 9 countries will be 223 jets.

Besides Germany's 73 order of A400M, France will order 50, 27 for Spain, 25 for UK, 20 for Turkey, 16 for Italy, and the rest will be ordered by Portugal, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

Please point out that should this post move to Military jet forum or not.

The reason why I'm not sure, because I don't think Airbus ever builts military jets.

The A310 is widely used as a military transport.

The Luftwaffe ones can be frequently seen at ORD or ELP.

They don't make them yet, but in a few weeks they are planning to roll out a military transport called the A400M.

Airbus does not make purpose built military jets. Some of their passenger planes are used as military transport.

However, Airbus is owned by two European aerospace companies: European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) and BAE Systems. Both companies are heavily involved in the military market and their main source of revenues are military sales and government contracts.

By the way, some people claim that Boeing "subsidizes" their commercial airplane operations via huge government contracts in their military branch. Well, exactly the same is true for Airbus. The difference is that Boeing is openly in the military market, while in case of Airbus the funds flow through the parent companies. But Airbus benefits from military and government contracts as much (or more) as Boeing.

Dear Katekebo,

I see that one more time you want to introduce an A vs B war.
Do you have facts and numbers for what you say ?

Airbus will launch a military transport A/C.
We are talking about an Airbus entity part of AIC, not a structure EADS related outside Airbus like mentioned
previously...

Katekebo,

EADS gets most of its profits from Airbus, not the military projects.

Sebolino,

Like you said, let's not start an A vs. B war, but you can have a look at EADS's and Boeing financials on the web.

EADS earned 59% of their money from military/government contracts in 2000. Since EADS was only recently created, they don't have earlier statements.

Boeing earned 66%, 66%, and 61% of their revenue from commercial aircraft in 1998, 1999 and 2000, respectively. 2000 was a bad year for Boeing - Military contracts stayed constant, but commercial sales took a hit due to labor problems.

I am not interested in any kind of A vs. B war. The fact is that both EADS and BAE are primarily military contractors and most of their business is in the military area. For more info, you can read publically available information about these companies:
http://www.baesystems.com
http://www.eads.net
http://www.boeing.com

Go to Investors Relations and do some numbers.

Combined BAE and EADS sales are $40b. Out of that, 42% comes from commercial airplanes (Airbus).

Boeing sales are $51b. Out of that, 58% comes from commercial airplanes.

All numbers based on official 2000 Annual Reports (rounded to nearest billion).

In addition to the fact that most of the revenues of Airbus parent companies come from their military business (contrary to Boeing), Airbus has been openly subsidized by the European governments to gain independence from the the American monopoly in aerospace industry.

There is no doubt that Boeing benefits a lot from military and government contracts. But the same is even more true for Airbus.

Just to set the facts straight.

Getting back to the original topic......

With the exception of those conversions and New built A-300/310 aircraft. Airbus does not now have in production or will have in production a specifically designed military Jet.

Can I be sure of this......Yes.......Why you ask?

In it's latest form the A.400 is a Turboprop not a jet. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Remember that Airbus is simply the commercial jet branch of EADS. The A400 is the first diversion of that principle. Military products have not been part of Airbus' portfolio because the parent company(ies) keep that for themselves - not because Airbus is some kind of green, peace-loving organization.
